KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The Duke women's golf team struggled to a final round 315 on Sunday as the Blue Devils battled very strong winds to fall to third place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.
Purdue University fired a team-best 305 Sunday and ended up winning by five strokes (902) over Auburn University (907), Duke (910), Georgia (910) and host Tennessee (917). Each of the teams score on Sunday was greatly inflated due to the bad weather as the Blue Devils were forced to count a 13-over-par on Sunday, which led to its 27-over-par round.
Duke sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) finished the tournament second overall after turning in a 76 in the final round. After recording a collegiate best round of 67 on Friday, Hardin finished with rounds of 77-76 and finished with a 220. Kari Damron of Purdue picked up individual medallist honors with a 217.
Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) carded a 75 today and finished in sixth overall for the tournament (223, +7). Junior Maria Garcia Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) finished tied for 29th overall after registering a 79 on Sunday, while freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) and junior Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) struggled today as each finished with an 85.
Duke will next travel to Auburn, Ala. on Nov. 9-11 to compete in the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational.
