PACIFIC PALISADES, calif. - Duke freshman Kelly McCain advanced to the final four of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American on Friday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The product of Wesley Chapel, Fla. defeated second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria of Stanford (6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 in the final 16 and then knocked off eighth-ranked Mariel Verban of Georgia (6-2, 6-2) to reach the semifinals of the first grand slam of the 2001-02 season. McCain, ranked 49th in the preseason ITA rankings, becomes the second consecutive Duke freshman to advance to the semifinals of the Riviera All-American. Ansley Cargill , which turned professional over the summer, won the ITA All-American last year on her way to being named national freshman of the year.
Ninth-ranked sophomore Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) advanced to the Elite Eight by knocking off 10th-ranked Gabriela Lastra of Stanford (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), but then fell to 18th-ranked Kim Niggemeyer of Fresno State (4-6, 2-6). McCain will face fourth-ranked Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion in the semifinals on Saturday. In the other semifinal match, seventh-ranked Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff will go up against Niggemeyer of Fresno State.
The consolation singles matches began on Friday and junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) won her two matches over 20th-ranked Claire Carter of Washington (6-1, 6-3) and 27th-ranked Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky (7-6, 5-7, 6-2).
In the consolation doubles matches, Duke's Susie Abromeit/Johnson fell to Lia Jackson/Marine Piriou of Northwestern (4-8) and DeRoo/McCain fell to Tiffany Brymer/Jewel Peterson of Southern California (4-8).
During the season, the ITA hosts three national collegiate championships with the Riviera All-American being the first one of the season. The second is the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas and the final is the NCAA Championships.
