PACIFIC PALISADES, calif. - Sophomore Amanda Johnson and freshman Kelly McCain advanced to the final 16 of the main draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American on Thursday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The ninth-ranked product of Bettendorf, Iowa, Johnson knocked off 34th-ranked Lia Jackson of Northwestern (6-1, 6-0) and will face Stanford's 10th-ranked Gabriela Lastra on Friday. McCain, currently ranked 49th in the ITA rankings, downed Luana Magnani of Southern California (6-2, 3-2, retired). The Wesley Chapel, Fla. native, will battle second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria of Stanford to advance to the Elite Eight.
Duke's 21st-ranked Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) fell in the first round of the main draw to fifth-ranked Sara Walker of UCLA (1-6, 3-6).
In doubles action, both of Duke's teams fell in the first round of the main draw. The 30th-ranked duo of Susie Abromeit/Johnson fell to top-ranked Simone Jardim/Kim Niggemeyer of Fresno State (3-8) and the 37th-ranked team of McCain/DeRoo lost to Stanford's seventh-ranked Kalvaria/Lastra (3-8).
During the season, the ITA hosts three national collegiate championships with the Riviera All-American being the first one of the season. The second is the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas and the final is the NCAA Championships.
