Last Game Against Wake Forest...
Senior Georgia Schweitzer became Duke's all-time leader in three point
field goals made as the Blue Devils cruised to their first ACC victory of
the season with a 81-56 over Wake Forest.
Schweitzer hit 3-of-5 from downtown to improve her career total to 161 at Duke, which broke Jennifer Scanlon's record of 159. For the game, Schweitzer scored 15 points, dished out six assists, and posted three steals.
Duke jumped out to an early 39-20 lead at the end of the first half behind seven points each from freshman Iciss Tillis and Schweitzer. The Blue Devils forced 23 Wake Forest turnovers and hit 13-15 from the free throw line in first half.
At the beginning of the second half, Schweitzer hit the record setting trey at the 18:34 mark and Duke would not look back behind nine points in the next five minutes from Tillis. Tillis hit a 3-pointer and three lay-ups to end up with 16 points for the game, which matched her career-high. Tillis also finished the game with three blocks, six rebounds, two assists, and hit 7-of-11 from the field.
For the game, Duke made and attempted a season-high 28-of-40 from the free throw line and held Wake Forest to 0-10 from behind the 3-point arc. It was the second time in the last four games Duke has held an opponent to zero three point field goals made (Arkansas State, 12-17-00).

6,194 fans at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday in Durham, N.C. Duke
improves to 20-1, 8-1, which is first place in the ACC, while Clemson falls
to 15-5, 6-3.
Mosch hit a Duke record 12 of 12 from the field and also added 11 rebounds, six assists, and five steals in only 29 minutes of action. The double-double is only her second of her career and her 30 points scored marks the third game in a row Mosch has scored over 20 points. Mosch has scored 84 points in the last three games for a 28.0 average.
Duke jumped on Clemson early as the Blue Devils led 17-7 after the first five minutes of action and then went on a 39-12 run to close out the first half leading 56-19. The current Basketball Times Coach of the Year and three-time ACC Coach of
the Year Gail Goestenkors is entering her ninth campaign in Durham with the
Blue Devils. Over her Blue Devil career, Coach "G" has accomplished feats
no other Duke coach has attained.
She has guided Duke to a school-record six straight NCAA tournament appearances, leading them to Duke's first-ever Elite Eight in 1998, first Final Four in 1998-99, two ACC regular season titles, and the 2000 ACC Tournament title. Her six 20-win seasons (22 in 1995, 26 in 1996, 24 in 1998, school-record 29 in 1999, 28 in 2000, and yet to be determined in 2000-01) is also a first for a Duke coach.
Coach "G" was named the 2000 Basketball Times Coach of the Year and Naismith Coach of the Year Finalist. Goestenkors is a 1985 graduate of Saginaw Valley State, where she earned NAIA All-America honors at point guard. She came to Duke in 1992 after a successful six-year stint as an assistant coach at Purdue.
The only coach in Duke history to post six 20-win seasons, Coach G currently has a career/school record of 196-75 (.723). She owns a career 54-4 record at home against non-conference opponents and a 13-6 overall record in the NCAA Tournament play.

The Blue Devils have held opponents to under 50% shooting in 35 of the last 37 games and 54 of the last 57 games. Duke has only allowed an opponent to shoot over 50% six different times in the last three years.

Pickup Up The Scoring...
Since freshman Alana Beard was injured against N.C. State on 1/18, Duke has
won three games in a row and a number of players have picked up Beard's
scoring load.
Sophomore Sheana Mosch has taken the squad on her shoulders the past three games as she matched a career high with 25 points at Virginia on 1/22, then poured in a then career-high 29 points on 1/25 at North Carolina, and then posted a career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds on 1/28 against Clemson. She struggled from the field hitting only 5-of-17, but had three steals, three assists and hit 6-of-6 from the free throw line in 32 minutes of action. Tillis then came back and scored nine points and pulled down nine boards at North Carolina and tallied 16 points and four rebounds against Clemson. She is averaging 13.7 points and 8.0 rebounds in the last three games.
One of Duke's other super freshmen, Rometra Craig, has started the past three games and at North Carolina turned in her best performance of the season with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 37 minutes. Sophomore Michele Matyasovsky is averaging 7.3 points and 2.7 rebounds the last three games.
The Defensive Stopper...
When you talk about an all-everything player, senior Rochelle Parent's name
should come to mind. The 6-0 post player out of Akron, Ohio sacrifices her
body each and every night she steps out on the court.
In 21 games so far this season, Parent has registered 28 charges taken. She notched five charges taken against No. 9 Penn State, four at Clemson, three versus No. 5 Iowa State and North Carolina, two against No. 7 LSU, Arkansas State, and Oral Roberts, and one against No. 24 Boston College, Virginia, Duquesne, Wake Forest, Florida State, N.C. 20 Wins Once Again...
Duke notched 20 wins for the sixth time under head coach Gail Goestenkors
on Sunday with its 92-42 victory over Clemson. It is the fourth year in a
row Duke has notched 20 wins. Before Coach G arrived in 1992-93, the women'
s basketball program had only reached the 20-win mark one time (1985-86,
21-9) with Debbie Leonard as head coach.
The Freshman Sensation...
The fabulous Duke freshman Alana Beard was injured on 1/18 against N.C.
State and will miss approximately two more weeks after having surgery to
reduce a dislocated thumb. She provided an instant offensive and defensive
impact for the Blue Devils this season starting Duke's first 18 games prior
to the injury.
The native of Frierson, La. was rated the No. 5 high school senior last year by the ASGR and was playing like the National Freshman of the Year.
She leads the Blue Devils with a 16.8 scoring average, 64 steals (3.56), is second with 64 assists (3.56) and 18 blocks (1.0) and is averaging 4.8 rebounds in 18 games. Her 3.56 steals a game leads the ACC and ranks ninth in the NCAA.
On Jan. 15, Beard was named ACC Player and Rookie of the Week. It marked the first time Beard has been selected Player of the Week and the fifth time she has been named Rookie of the Week. The honor also marks a first in the ACC as no freshman has ever been named Player and Rookie of the Week in the same week.
For the week, Beard averaged 28.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks in three ACC victories for Duke. She shot a whopping 67% from the field, 40% from 3-point land, and 81% from the free throw line. . On 1/14 at Maryland, Beard scored a Duke freshman record and career-high 33 points. The 33 points also ranks seventh on Duke's career list for points scored in a game by any player and is the most points scored in the ACC this season by any player.
Out of the top 25 high school seniors last year, Beard leads the group in scoring. A listing of the top 25 seniors from last year are in a table on page two.
Two of Duke's other freshmen, Iciss Tillis and Rometra Craig each also rank up there in scoring. Tillis is averaging 9.7 points and Craig is averaging 7.8 points. Craig was selected ACC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 18 and Tillis on Jan. 8 and Jan. 29.

Tillis, Vicki Krapohl, and Crystal White have lived up to their billing as
the top rated recruiting class in the country by Athlon Sports so far this
season.
All five players have seen action during the season with Beard starting her first 18 games before being injured and Tillis starting 20 of the first 21 games. Craig has started the past three games since Beard was injured against N.C. State.
In the first 22 games, freshmen have led Duke in scoring in 14 of them. Beard has led the Blue Devils in 11 games, Craig has led in two games, and Tillis in one game. The only other names to appear are senior Georgia Schweitzer (three times), sophomore Sheana Mosch (three times) and Rochelle Parent (one time).
Streak Breakers...
Duke's two road games at No. 9/8 Penn State and at No. 24/19 Boston College
were key road wins against ranked opponents for the Blue Devils. The losses
for the Lady Lions and the Eagles also broke their 16-game home winning
streaks. These victories for Duke were huge as its bench played a big part
in both victories, scoring a combined 46 points.
The Blue Devils also broke Iowa State's nine-game winning streak and George Mason's five-game winning streak to open the season, while Duke's win over Oral Roberts broke its five-game winning steak and Duke's win at Florida State broke its the Seminoles six game winning streak. The win at Maryland broke its seven game home winning streak to begin the season. Duke has taken down seven ranked opponents in seven tries.
Duke's recent win against Clemson broke its four-game winning streak.
Craig Named Rookie of the Week...
Freshman Rometra Craig was named ACC Rookie of the Week on December 18
after posting 10 points, one rebound, one assist and two steals in the Blue
Devils' 69-45 victory over Arkansas State in the Fun in the Sun Shootout

The rookie hailing from Portola Valley, California, hit 50.0 percent from the floor (4 for 8) and played 21 minutes.
The "D" in Devils...

The Countdown to 200...
The countdown to the 200 victory mark began on Nov. 10 against UCLA. Head
Coach Gail Goestenkors currently has 196 wins under her belt and needs four
more to reach the milestone. She would mark the second Duke women's
basketball coach to reach the 200-win plateau as Debbie Leonard notched 212
victories in 15 seasons. Goestenkors has notched 196 wins in only nine
seasons.
The Record Watch...
Senior Georgia Schweitzer will be making attempts each game during the
2000-01 season to break Duke career records. The Columbus, Ohio native
moved into fourth place on Duke's career points scored list with her 18
points at North Carolina on 1/25 and now has 1,417 in her career.
Schweitzer became only the fourth player in Duke history to score over 1,400 points.
All the career records are listed on page 10 of the game notes. Junior Krista Gingrich ranks ninth on the career 3-point field goals made list (70) and ninth in 3-point field goals attempted (202).

ACC Media Day. This marks only the second time the Blue Devils have been
picked to win the ACC in the preseason (other was in 1998 and finished
first). Duke received 322 total votes and 34 of 36 first place votes, while
Virginia received two first place and 278 votes. N.C. State (232), UNC
(206), Clemson (174), Georgia Tech (148), Maryland (120), Florida State
(82), and Wake Forest (46) round out the nine ACC schools.
Duke swept the other two honors given out as Georgia Schweitzer was tabbed preseason Player of the Year and freshman Alana Beard was selected preseason Freshman of the Year.

Duke Inks Top Recruits...
Duke University women's basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors announced on
Nov. 15, 2000 the signing of two of the top high school basketball players
in the country, Monique Curry (Potomac, Md.) and Wynter Whitley (Atlanta,
Ga.). Curry and Whitley will attend Duke in the fall of 2001 and play
basketball for the Blue Devils.
"Both Wynter and Monique are very gifted players," said Goestenkors. "They are not only athletic but very skilled as well. Each will give us an added dimension of strength that we don't possess much of right now. They are both very powerful, physical players that can hit the three-pointer and will fit very well into our five-out motion style play."
Curry, a 6-0 shooting guard/wing, is out of The Bullis School in Potomac, Md. where she averaged 190 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists as a junior. She guided The Bullis School to a 27-2 record and to the Independent School League regular season and tournament titles for the first time in the school history, while being named Player of the Year by the Washington Post. Last summer, Curry was selected MVP at the adidas Camp in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"Monique is one of the most physically gifted players we have ever signed," said Goestenkors. "She is a perfect motion player because she is smart, can hit the three, penetrates very well, finishes, and can post up. She is also a very unselfish player, which will make it very difficult for other teams to defend. Monique will fit into our style of play of running and pressing as well."
As a sophomore, she averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds a game and her freshman year scored at a 18.3 clip. Curry has performed as well in the classroom as on the court posting a 3.4 grade-point-average. She is ranked No. 3 in the All-Star Girls Report's (ASGR) Top 150 Prep Prospects. She is the highest ranked high school player to sign with the Blue Devils.
Whitley is a 6-2 power forward from Holy Innocents Episcopal in Atlanta, Ga. She is currently ranked No. 5 in the FoxStudentSports.com top 40 seniors and No. 15 in the ASGR top 15 prep rankings, after averaging 22.1 points and 8.9 rebounds as a junior. Whitley guided her team to a 23-5 record and earned All-Region, All-State, and Class A Player of the Year honors.
"Wynter is a 6-2 power forward who is stronger than most of the post players we have on the team," said Goestenkors. "She can take her hits on the inside and finish with contact as well as play out on the perimeter, hit the three-point shot, and make good decisions with the basketball. She is someone that will add another dimension to our team with her physical play."
Her sophomore year Whitley averaged 24.1 points and 10.2 rebounds and led her team to a 30-4 record and the Class A State Championship title. She was also named MVP of the state tournament, first-team All-State, Class 6A Player of the Year, and All-Region as a sophomore. For the past two years in a row, Whitley has been selected the Atlanta Journal & Constitution Player of the Year for Fulton County and USA Today rated her as one of the top juniors in the nation in 2000. She carries a 3.5 grade-point-average in the classroom.
Duke's recruiting class will once again rank near the top in the nation with Curry and Whitley signing. Last year's class was tabbed No. 1 in the nation by Athlon Sports, while the 1999-00 class was rated as high as No. 4 by the Blue Star Report.
Welcome Back Starters...
The Blue Devils will welcome back four starters off their 26-8 team from a
year ago -- Georgia Schweitzer, Krista Gingrich, Rochelle Parent, and Sheana
Mosch bring key experience to a squad that has 10 freshmen and sophomores on
the roster.
Among the starters returning, Duke also returns All-ACC Freshman team member is Michele Matyasovsky, a 2000 ACC All-Tournament second-team member, the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in 2000-01, and sophomores Lello Gebisa, LaNedra Brown, and Olga Gvozdenovic.
Duke returns 59.2 points per game, while losing only 15.3 ppg.
