Play was halted early in the day Saturday due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gordon, which is expected to bring around seven inches of rain in Lake County on Sunday. Play resumed in the afternoon and then concluded in a driving rain storm. The third round was then cancelled due to Hurricane Gordon.
Duke picked up the victory for the second consecutive year, after turning in rounds of 296 and 299 (595), which was 11-over par as a team. The Blue Devils edged out defending national champion Arizona by three strokes (598).
The Blue Devils were led by sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) and freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand), which tied for fourth with a 148 (75-73=148, +2). Freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) turned in a 72-79=151 (+5) to finish tied for 17th and senior Kalen Anderson shot a final round 74 (78-74=152, +6) to finish tied for 22nd. Junior Candy Hannemann struggled on day two as she shot an 80 after firing a first-day total of 74 to finish tied for 34th (74-80=154, +8).
The Wake Forest duo of Marta Prieto and Maria Beautell won individual honors after netting a two-day total of 146. Rounding out the top 10 team standings were Tennessee (601), Wake Forest (603), Southern California (605), Auburn (607), New Mexico State (611), LSU (617), Texas (618), and Nebraska (620).
The Blue Devils will next travel on Tobacco Road for the Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 6-8 at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
