Three Former Duke Golfers Advance to Third Round of Sectional Qualifying

VENICE, Fla. - Aug. 23, 2000 - Korea's Soo Yun Kang set a Bobcat Course record with a seven-under-par 65 in the second round of the 2000 LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla., en route to a 138 (-6) 36-hole total to grab a three-stroke, second-round lead over fellow Korean Ji Hyun Suh (141, -3) and former LPGA Tour player Suzy Green. Kang's 65 was one stroke off the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament record of 64 set by Annika Sorenstam in 1993 on the Plantation's Panther Course and tied her career-low competitive round.

Kang, who started play on the 10th hole, birdied holes 12, 15 and 16 to get to three-under-par before suffering her only bogey of the day on the par-4 17th hole due to an unplayable lie in a bunker. Kang recovered quickly with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole to make the turn at three-under-par for the day. She added birdies on holes two, four, six and seven to finish at seven-under-par for the day and 138 (-6) for the tournament.

"I was just putting very well today and hitting good iron shots," said Kang, who won the 2000 Korean Women's Open. "The course played good today and is playing a little bit easier than the Panther Course. I feel comfortable going into the final two rounds."

Suh, who carded a second-round, two-over-par 74 after opening with a 67 (-5) in the first round, is tied for second place with Green (72-69) heading into the third round. Beth Bauer, a member of the 2000 U.S. Curtis Cup Team and 1999 ACC Player of the Year, and Connie Wei are tied for fourth place at two-under-par 142. Hee-Won Han, also a native Korean, is in sixth place at 143 (-1).

The 149-player field was cut to 75 players at 152 (+8), and the remaining players will play the 6,245-yard Bobcat Course for the final 36 holes. The top 30 players from the Venice sectional will advance to the LPGA Tour's Final Qualifying Tournament, Oct. 17-20, at LPGA International's Champions Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Jenny Chuasiriporn, the 1998 U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Women's Amateur runner-up is tied for 10th at 145 (+1), while Jenna Daniels, the 2000 NCAA individual champion, is tied for 18th place at 147 (+3). Marcy Newton, the 2000 U.S. Women's Amateur champion, is tied for 50th at 150 (+6) after carding a second consecutive three-over-par 75.

The Venice qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2000. The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for Sept. 12-15, will be played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The top 30 finishers from the Rancho Mirage qualifier, the Venice sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status, as well as the seven players who finished fourth through 10th on the 2000 SBC Futures Tour money list will travel to the LPGA's Final Qualifying Tournament.
