"I am saddened by Dahntay's decision to leave Rutgers, but I wish him and his family nothing but the best," coach Kevin Bannon said Monday. "Dahntay is a fine young man who did everything that we asked of a student-athlete, and he has a bright future.
"It's unfortunate, but sometimes things just don't work out," Bannon added. "However, we're confident that our program will continue to move forward and grow."
Jones, a 6-foot-5, 210-pounder, averaged 16 points last season. He scored 836 points in his two seasons, a 13.3 point average.
Rutgers (15-16) went to the NIT the past two seasons, but there were reports after this season ended that Jones was unhappy because he felt he would not get to the next level in basketball if he stayed at the school.
Jones will have to sit out the 2000-01 season and would then have two years of eligibility remaining.
