DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 3 ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team came into Durham on Wednesday and did something no ACC team has done in the past 12 years, beat Duke. Wake Forest defeated the Blue Devils 6-3 and broke Duke's 116-match overall and 82-match regular season win streak. The last ACC loss for the Blue Devils was on March 30, 1989 to Wake Forest (5-4) in Winston-Salem, N.C. WFU improves to 14-1, 4-0, while Duke falls to 14-5, 3-1 in ACC play.
Wake Forest took an early lead in the singles matches as No. 5 ranked Adria Engel defeated No. 14 Megan Miller of Duke (6-0, 6-2) and No. 23 Bea Bielik knocked off Duke's No. 33 ranked Kathy Sell (6-1, 6-4) in the top two singles spots.
Duke's Erica Biro then netted a victory over Maren Haus (6-1, 6-1) to cut the Demon Deacons lead to 2-1. Blue Devil freshman Katie Granson took an early lead over No. 39 ranked Janet Bergman, but ended up falling in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) and in the No. 4 singles slot freshman Hillary Adams had an impressive win over No. 72 Jackie Houston (6-2, 2-6, 6-0).
It came down to the No. 6 singles position and Wake Forest's Annemarie Milton won the three-set battle over Prim Siripipat 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Going into the doubles competition, No. 14 Duke trailed 4-2 and needed to win all three matches to keep the streak alive. The Blue Devils came out and won the No. 2 slot by Adams/Miller over Haus/Milton (8-2), but the No. 1 doubles duo of Brooke Siebel/Erica Biro started off slow and then tried to make a comeback, but it came up short losing 8-3 to Bielik/Bergman.
The No. 3 combination of Sell/Granson for Duke got off to an early lead, but couldn't hold on falling 8-6 to Engel/Houston. Duke will travel to Maryland on Saturday (12:00) and Virginia on Sunday (2:00 PM).
