Women's Golf Captures 2000 ACC Championship

CLEMMONS, N.C. - Led by freshman Maria Garcia-Estrada, the Duke women's golf team finished its run to the championship by winning the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship by 36 strokes at the 6,355-yard, par-72 Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.
The Blue Devils (295-286-290=871), who broke the previous 54-hole team total of 890 by 19 strokes in this weekend's tournament, were followed in the team standings by Wake Forest at 310-300-295=905 and North Carolina which finished third with a 54-hole total of 319-299-300=918. Florida State finished in fourth place with a three-day total of 335-315-324=974, and Maryland rounded out the field in fifth place at 348-349-329=1026.
Estrada became the third-straight freshman to capture the ACC individual title as she finished at 1-under-par 76-67-72=215. She was followed in the individual standings by a pair of Blue Devils tied for second place including sophomore Beth Bauer (73-72-72=217) and Candy Hannemann, who finished at 70-74-73=217. Rounding out the top five in the individual event were Wake Forest junior Marta Prieto at 7-over-par, 75-75-73=223 and Duke junior Kalen Anderson at 77-73-73=223, both of whom tied for fourth place.
The ACC title was the fifth straight for the Blue Devils and the eighth in the program's history.
