Women's Golf Takes Lead After 18 Holes At ACC Championship

CLEMMONS, N.C. (April 14) - The Duke women's golf team used four rounds in the seventies to take a 15-stroke lead with a 7-over-par 295 team score after 18 holes of play at the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship being played at the 6,355-yard, par-72 Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.

Following the Blue Devils in the team standings are Wake Forest, which finished the day with a team score of 310, and North Carolina in third at 319. The Florida State Seminoles are in fourth place with a first day total of 335, and rounding out the field is the University of Maryland at 348.

The Blue Devils were led by sophomore Candy Hannemann, who was the lone golfer to record a round under par as she carded a 34-36=70 to take a three-stroke lead in the individual standings after the first round of play. She is followed in the individual event by fellow Blue Devil Beth Bauer, who finished the first 18 holes with a 1-over-par 37-36=73 on Friday.

Following Hannemann and Bauer is Wake Forest junior Marta Prieto, who lead the Demon Deacons with a 3-over-par 37-38=3D75 in the first round. Rounding out the top five are three players tied for fourth place at 4-over-par 76. Included in that group are Maria Garcia-Estrada and Kristina Engstrom of Duke and North Carolina's Abby Spector.

The ACC Championship will continue tomorrow with the second round of play beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday with the third and final round of competition.
