Second-ranked Women's Golf Extends Lady Gamecock Classic Lead

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. -- Second-ranked Duke had the day's best team score by an amazing 13 strokes and extended its lead on 11th-ranked Louisiana State to 14 strokes after two rounds of the Lady Gamecock Classic at The University Club. The Blue Devils have a comfortable lead on the rest of the field, including a 36-shot bulge on host and 13th-ranked South Carolina with one round to play on the par 72, 5,996-yard course.

The third and final round gets underway via a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The Blue Devils had all five of its players score in the 70s ? the remaining teams had just 20 total ? as Duke extended its lead from one stroke on Friday to 14 strokes after 36 holes. Louisiana State has a 615 total and has a 11-stroke lead on Tennessee, who has a 626. Florida (628) and Mississippi State (629) rounded out the top five. The Lady Gamecocks had a 320 Saturday and at 637 is in seventh place and eight strokes out of the top five.

The teams braved colder than normal conditions and gusting winds in excess of 20 mph. Only Duke scored less than 300 with nine of the 11 teams carding scores of 28-over 310 or higher. The average score was slightly lower than the day before (80.46 today, 80.65 yesterday) with no hole average being at par over the two-day period.

Duke's Kalen Anderson posted the only sub-par round of the tournament in firing a one-under 71 Saturday. She shares the individual lead with LSU's Lisette Lee (72 Saturday ) at one-over 145. The duo has a two-stroke lead over Tennessee's Young-A Yang, who had a 73 Saturday and has a two-day 147 total. Tina Howard of LSU and Duke's Amie Lehman round out the top five at seven-over 151.

The host Lady Gamecocks had their best scoring day from an individual who was playing for individual medalist honors only. Irmo native and freshman Kacy Thompson had a three-over 75 and is tied for ninth place with a two-day 154 total. She is joined by sophomore Dallas Ambrose, who had a 77 Saturday and is tied for ninth with a 154 total as well. Freshman Kristy McPherson injured her wrist on the front nine and struggled to a 10-over 82 and is tied for 25th place at 159. Emma Lofgren (162, T35th), Apryl Arrants (162, T35th) and Stefanie Reynolds (168, T49th) round out USC's players. Carolina has three other players vying for individual honors only ? Sarah Kidd (161, T32nd), Kristin Ruble (163, T38th) and Abby Derman (169, T52nd).
