Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Sea Best Intercollegiate on January 26, 2026

3/18/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
The second of three rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday from both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
The Blue Devils hold the opening round lead despite an unusually poor showing from their top player, nationally fifth-ranked Beth Bauer, who posted a seven-over 79. The Blue Devils shot a 21-over par 309 and lead Louisiana State by one stroke. Tennessee stands in third place at 312 with North Carolina one stroke behind the Lady Vols at 313. South Carolina and Alabama round out the top five at 29-over 317.
The course played tougher than normal under what seemed to be good conditions for low scores. The average score by the 63-player field was almost nine-over par 80.65 with no hole in the course yielding a par or better average all day. Only 52 birdies were shot all afternoon, while there were scores of bogey or higher an amazing 491 times.
North Carolina's Marcy Newton and LSU's Lisette Lee traded identical front and back nine scores (Newton 38-35, Lee 35-38) and are tied for medalist honors after one round at one-over 73. Young-A Yang of Tennessee and Duke's Kalen Anderson are tied for third at two-over 74 while Alabama's Paula Carter rounded out the top five at three-over 75. Only 25 players shot scores below eight-over par 80.
The host Lady Gamecocks seemed primed for a run at the top spot after the opening round, but saw their top player senior Emma Lofgren fire an uncharacteristic 11-over 83 for 46th place. Freshman Kristy McPherson and sophomore Dallas Ambrose each had scores of 38-39=77 and are tied for seventh place. Senior Apryl Arrants (80, T26th) and junior Stefanie Reynolds (85, T55th) rounded out the USC individuals playing for the team scores. Four Carolina players saw action for medalist honors only Kacy Thompson (79, T16th place), Abby Derman (80, T26th), Sarah Kidd (80, T26th) and Kristin Ruble (82, T38th).
