CANCUN, MEXICO-- Senior Georgia Schweitzer scored a game-high 17 points as the No. 7 ranked Duke women's basketball team captured the Fun in the Sun Shootout title on Tuesday with a 62-51 victory over Oral Roberts in Cancun, Mexico.
Schweitzer tallied 37 points, 14 rebounds, 13 steals, and eight assists in two games as she was named MVP. Sophomore Sheana Mosch scored 12 points on Tuesday and was selected to the All-Tournament team.
Duke jumped out to a commanding 24-10 lead and led 41-30 at the end of the first half, behind 10 points each from Alana Beard, Schweitzer, and Mosch. Oral Roberts came back in the second half and cut the Duke lead to 41-37, but the Blue Devils went on a 10-2 run to go up 51-39 with 14:22 remaining.
The Blue Devils had as big as a 14-point lead in the final 10 minutes, but Shayne McKenzie's free throw with 3:25 left cut Duke's lead to nine, 55-46. Schweitzer, the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, posted two steals and four points in the final 2:21 to secure the victory for the Blue Devils.
Schweitzer finished the game with a Duke season-high seven steals on the night. Both teams struggled shooting from the field as Duke shot 35% and Oral Roberts 34%. Duke forced 25 ORU turnovers on the night and posted seven blocks as a team.
For Oral Roberts, McKenzie posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Krista Ragan finished with 16 points. Ragan was selected to the All-Tournament team. Other highlights for Duke include sophomore Michele Matyasovsky with eight points, six rebounds, and two blocks, and Beard scored 12 points, had six rebounds, four assists, six steals, and one block.
In the consolation game, Arkansas State defeated Florida Atlantic 100-75.
