CANCUN, MEXICO. - The No. 7 ranked Duke University women's basketball team coasted to a 69-45 victory over Arkansas State University on Sunday in the first round of the Fun in the Sun Shootout played in Cancun, Mexico.
Senior Georgia Schweitzer led the Blue Devils with a season-high 20 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Rometra Craig added 10 points.
Duke jumped out to a 35-21 first half lead behind 16 points from Schweitzer. In the final minutes of the first half, the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run as Schweitzer scored all seven points in the run. Duke closed out the first half with a 9-2 run.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with a 10-0 run and held Arkansas State scoreless for the first four minutes of action. Both teams struggled shooting on the night in Municipal gymnasium, which seats approximately 250 fans, as they shot a combined 37-111 from the field. Duke finished the game shooting 24 of 58 for 41%.
Leading the way for Arkansas State, was Rae-Anne Smith with 10 points and Jolie McKeirnan added 10 rebounds. The Lady Indians were held to 0-16 shooting from behind the three-point line, while committing 29 turnovers.
Other leaders for Duke include Alana Beard with seven points and four rebounds, Rochelle Parent with six points and five rebounds, and Missy West with six points off the bench.
The victory for the Blue Devils improves Duke to 10-1 on the season, while Arkansas State falls to 4-5.
Duke will take on the winner of game two between Oral Roberts (4-3) and Florida Atlantic University (3-5) in the championship game on Tuesday, December 19, 2000.
