DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Blue Devils women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament for the second consecutive season as the Blue Devils defeated Furman University 3-1 at Koskinen Stadium on Wednesday night.
"I am very pleased that we scored early because playing a team like this, if you let them in, they are certainly very capable of sticking one as they have done many, many times this year," said Duke head coach Bill Hempen.
Duke dominated the entire first half as they outshot Furman 8-2. Sophomore Allison Sanders (Summerville, S.C.) had several scoring opportunities early in the first half and finally capitalized in the 18th minute when she headed home freshman Gwendolyn Oxenham's (Gulf Breeze, Fl.) cross for her sixth goal of the year to put Duke up 1-0.
Sophomore Carly Fuller (Portland, Ore.) gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead at 42:34 off a free kick when she beat Furman goalkeeper Melissa Barnes with a shot to the upper corner. The play was set up by freshman Ali Kopman (Atherton, Ca.), who beat two Furman defenders before being fouled just outside the top of the box.
Sanders had another golden opportunity three minutes into the second half when she hit the crossbar with a shot after junior Katie Heaps (Longmeadow, Ma.) beat two Furman defenders down the sideline and crossed the ball into the box.
Duke continued their offensive display as senior Susan Kraeger (St. Louis, Mo.) scored her second goal of the year off a corner kick at 74:28 to put the Blue Devils up 3-0.
Furman (20-3) managed a late charge as freshman Emily Turgeon scored her 23rd goal of the season when she beat Duke goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) at 82:21 with a near post shot to cut the score to 3-1.
Duke (14-7-1) advances to the second round of the 2000 Division I Women's Soccer Championship where they will take on third-seeded Clemson in Clemson, South Carolina on Saturday, November 11 at 7 p.m.
