Amanda Johnson Advances to Semis; Johnson/Miller Advance to Finals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) advanced to
the semifinals of the 2000 ITA Southeast Regional Qualifying Championships on
Sunday with victories over Sarah Witten of Kentucky (6-1, 6-1) and No. 20
ranked Carmen Giraldo of Clemson (4-6, 6-0, 6-0). Johnson, currently ranked
No. 88 in the latest ITA rankings, will battle No. 31 ranked Janet Bergman of
Wake Forest on Monday.
Also advancing on Sunday, was Duke's doubles duo of Johnson/Megan Miller. The duo defeated Wake Forest's Bergman/Aimee Smith 6-3, 6-1 and will take on Lauren Rookledge/Brooke Skeen of Kentucky in the finals Monday.
Duke's senior Kathy Sell advanced to the final eight after defeating North Carolina's Kate Pinchbeck (6-3, 6-3), but fell to UNC's No. 42 ranked Marlene Mejia (6-3, 6-7, 3-6). Sophomore No. 78 Katie Granson lost on Sunday in the final 16 to No. 90 Julie Rotondi of North Carolina (0-6, 0-6).
All matches are being played in the Indoor Tennis Center at Wake Forest.
