HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Duke University women's golf team, ranked No.
1 in the Golf World College Coaches' Poll, set a first-round tournament
record with a four-under-par 284 to lead the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes
Collegiate Invitational, presented by Cleveland Golf. Led by junior Candy
Hannemann and sophomore Maria Garcia-Estrada, who both shot 70, the Blue
Devils have a seven stroke lead over Auburn (291) and an eight shot lead
over Texas.The three other Blue Devils each shot an even par 72 -- Virada Nirapathpongporn, Kristina Engstrom, and Leigh Anne Hardin.
In the individual medallist competition Arizona freshman Lorena Ochoa shot a 68 to edge Tennessee's Young-A Yang (69) and Duke's Hannemann and Estrada. The second round will take place on Saturday and then the final round on Sunday.
The Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational, part of the 2000-01 Rolex Collegiate Tour, is presented by Cleveland Golf and administered by Golf World and the College Golf Foundation.
The Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall is a par 72 and will measure 6,257 yards for the women's competition.
The Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational is one of the most prestigious college events of the fall season. The tournament annually serves as a showcase for the country's top amateur players and was a springboard for such PGA Tour stars as Tiger Woods, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard and Notah Begay.
The tournament's supporting sponsors are Bridgestone Precept, Cross Creek Apparel, MasterCard, Royal Precision, the College Golf Foundation and Microsoft.
