No. 3 Blue Devils to Host Annual Duke Women's Basketball Classic...
The Duke women's basketball team will host the 13th annual Duke Women's Basketball Classic on Saturday and Sunday in the historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 3 in both the Associated Press poll & ESPN/USA Today poll.
The Duke Classic benefits the Ronald McDonald house in Durham. The Blue Devils have won the past eight Duke Classic titles and have won the title in 10 of the 13 years. The schedule of games are as follows -- Saturday, 1:00 PM - Radford (1-3) vs. Toledo (1-0); 3:00 PM - Duke (5-0) vs. Duquesne (2-0). Then, on Sunday the game times will be at 1:00/3:00 PM with Duke playing in the 3:00 PM game no matter what.
With each Duke Classic the Blue Devils set two goals -- To set the attendance record and to break the record for donations.

Duke Ranked No. 3 in Both Major Polls...
The Blue Devils are now ranked No. 3 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. The ranking marks the highest regular season ranking the Blue Devils have received. Duke was ranked No. 2 in the final ESPN/USA Today poll in 1998-99, after the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Championship.
In the preseason rankings, Duke was tabbed No. 4 in the ESPN/USA Today rankings, which equals the highest preseason ranking the Blue Devils have ever received. Duke was picked No. 4 in the preseason of the 1998-99 season in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today poll and ended up advancing to the NCAA Championship game.
With the ranking, it marks the 59th consecutive week the Blue Devils have been ranked in the top 25, dating back to the 1997-98 season.
Overall, in the preseason rankings, the Blue Devils were tabbed between No. 4 through No. 6. Duke was slated No. 4 by ESPN/USA Today, No. 4 by Sports Illustrated for Women, No. 5 by Associated Press, Athlon Sports, Lindy's Magazine, and ESPN The Magazine, while No. 6 by Street & Smith's and Women' sCollegeHoops.Com.
Last Time Out...
The Blue Devils ended a key road trip on Wednesday with a 67-49 victory over #24/19 Boston College. The loss for the Eagles broke their 16-game home win streak, which dated back to the 1998-99 season.
Once again freshmen Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis took control scoring 18 and 12 points respectively.
Beard got out of the blocks early scoring 12 points in the first half and finished the game with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and five steals in only 29 minutes of action.
Duke led 27-26 in a tight first half before breaking it open in the second behind a 27-8 run to begin the stanza.
Ten Blue Devils got into the scoring column and Duke held Boston College's leading scorer, Rachel Byars to zero points. She came into the game averaging 24.0 points in two games.
Senior Missy West added 10 points and senior Georgia Schweitzer chipped in eight for the Blue Devils.
Duke's 88-87 victory over Penn State also broke the Lady Lions 16-game home winning streak.
Beard Named ACC Rookie of the Week...
Duke freshman Alana Beard was selected ACC Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after averaging 16.3 points and 3.7 assists in three Blue Devil victories, which included a 56-45 victory over No. 7 LSU in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic. In the Classic, she was selected MVP after scoring 35 points in two games. The honor for Beard is the first for Duke since Georgia Schweitzer was tabbed Rookie of the Week in 1997-98.
Beard has come out of the blocks strong in her first five games at Duke. She is averaging 17.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 4.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks a game. Her 88 points, 21 steals, and 22 free throws made lead the team.
In the five games, she has scored 15 points (UCLA), 20 points (LSU), 14 points (W&M), 21 points (PSU), and 18 points (BC). Against Penn State on Nov. 20, she tallied a career high 21 points and six steals. The six steals is the third best ever at Duke by a freshman.
Taking Charge...
When you talk about an all-everything player, senior Rochelle Parent's name should come to mind. The 6-0 post player out of Akron, Ohio sacrifices her body each and every night she steps out on the court.
Parent tallied 20 charges taken last year as a junior, while being selected to the All-ACC Defensive team.
In five games so far this season, Parent has registered eight charges taken. She notched five charges taken against No. 9 Penn State, two against No. 7 LSU, and one against No. 24 Boston College.

The current Basketball Times Coach of the Year and three-time ACC Coach of the Year Gail Goestenkors is entering her ninth campaign in Durham with the Blue Devils. Over her Blue Devil career, Coach 'G' has accomplished feats no other Duke coach has attained.
She has guided Duke to a school-record six straight NCAA tournament appearances, leading them to Duke's first-ever Elite Eight in 1998, first Final Four in 1998-99, two ACC regular season titles, and the 2000 ACC Tournament title. Her five 20-win seasons (22 in 1995, 26 in 1996, 24 in 1998, school-record 29 in 1999, and 28 in 2000) is also a first for a Duke coach.
Coach 'G' was named the 2000 Basketball Times Coach of the Year and Naismith Coach of the Year Finalist. Goestenkors is a 1985 graduate of Saginaw Valley State, where she earned NAIA All-America honors at point guard. She came to Duke in 1992 after a successful six-year stint as an assistant coach at Purdue.
The only coach in Duke history to post five 20-win seasons, Coach G currently has a career/school record of 181-74 (.710). She owns a career 50-4 record at home against non-conference opponents and a 13-6 overall record in the NC
Craig Sparks Blue Devils...
Freshman high school All-America Rometra Craig sparked the Blue Devils on Nov. 18 over William & Mary with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. The scoring output for the freshman was a career-high. Craig is known as the strongest defensive player on the Blue Devil squad.
More On The Fab Five...
The Fab Five freshmen class for 2000-01 of Alana Beard, Rometra Craig, Iciss Tillis, Vicki Krapohl, and Crystal White have lived up to their billing as the top rated recruiting class in the country by Athlon Sports.
In five games, the five have totaled 202 points (40.4/g), 394 minutes (78.8/g), 72 rebounds (14.4/g), 31 assists (6.2/g), 13 blocks (2.6/g), and 41 steals (8.2/g).
Beard has led Duke in scoring four games, while Craig has led in one game scoring 19 points.
Duke Brings Home WSF Title...
On Nov. 10-11, the Blue Devils traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. to participate in the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) Classic hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Duke rolled to an 80-52 victory in game one over UCLA and then knocked off No. 7 LSU 56-45 in the championship game.
In the UCLA game, Duke was led with four players in double figures scoring -- Alana Beard (15 points), Georgia Schweitzer (14 points), Missy West (12 points), and Michele Matyasovsky (10 points).
Matyasovsky notched her first career double-double in the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Duke committed 30 turnovers in the game, while shooting 53% from the field.
In the championship game, the matchup had No. 4 Duke vs. No. 7 LSU in the rematch of the 2000 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game. LSU defeated Duke 79-66 to end the Blue Devils season.
The game turned out to be a very low scoring affair as Duke shot 33% from the field and LSU was held to only 29% from the field. Duke was led by Beard with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Iciss Tillis added nine points and Schweitzer scored nine.
Freshmen Notch Starting Nod in Classic...
Duke freshmen Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis earned the starting nod against both UCLA and LSU at the Women's Sports Foundation Classic. Freshmen starting under the direction of head coach Gail Goestenkors is a rarity. Only three players had started their first games in a Duke uniform -- Missy West in 96 (20 points), Ali Day in 92 (seven points), and Nazrawit Medhanie in 95 (two points).
Both Beard and Tillis started each of the two exhibition games with the both of them starting in the Classic, it marks the first time under Goestenkors that two freshmen started their first game in the same season.
Beard scored 15 points in her first game and Tillis scored nine.
Matyasovsky Posts First Double-Double of Career...
Sophomore Michele Matyasovsky posted her first career double-double against UCLA in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic on Nov. 10 to open the season. In the game, she tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds. She currently leads the squad with six blocked shots in five games.
WSF Tournament Honors...
Freshman Alana Beard was selected Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) Classic MVP after averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in two games. Senior Georgia Schweitzer (11.5 points, 3.5 rebounds) and freshman Iciss Tillis (9.0 points, 6.5 rebounds) each were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Beard was tabbed preseason ACC Freshman of the Year and Schweitzer preseason ACC Player of the Year, while it marks the first collegiate honor Tillis.
Young Guns...
The Duke lineup features many young faces each game with 10 freshmen and sophomores suiting up this season. In the first five games, the freshmen and sophomores have scored 272 out of 372 points and has seen a total of 650 minutes of action out of 1,000 minutes.
The Cameron Advantage...
Duke loves to play at home and its record showed once again as the Blue Devils recorded an unbelievable 47-4 record in Cameron Indoor Stadium dating back to the 1997-98 season. The Blue Devils had their 20-game ACC home winning streak broken on 2/3/00 against Maryland. The streak is the second longest in ACC women's basketball history behind Virginia's 30-game streak from 1992-96. Head coach Gail Goestenkors has totaled a 50-4 record against non-conference opponents in Cameron.
Duke Tabbed Preseason No. 1 in ACC by Media...
The Blue Devils were picked to finish first in the ACC by the media at the ACC Media Day. This marks only the second time the Blue Devils have been picked to win the ACC in the preseason (other was in 1998 and finished first). Duke received 322 total votes and 34 of 36 first place votes, while Virginia received two first place and 278 votes. N.C. State (232), UNC (206), Clemson (174), Georgia Tech (148), Maryland (120), Florida State (82), and Wake Forest (46) round out the nine ACC schools.
Duke swept the other two honors given out as Georgia Schweitzer was tabbed preseason Player of the Year and freshman Alana Beard was selected preseason Freshman of the Year.
Schweitzer, the reigning ACC Player of the Year, is the first Duke player to be selected preseason Player of the Year and Beard is the third Blue Devil to be tabbed preseason Freshman of the Year (Missy West, 1996 and Sheana Mosch, 1999).
The Countdown to 200...
The countdown to the 200 victory mark began on Nov. 10 against UCLA. Head Coach Gail Goestenkors currently has 181 wins under her belt and needs 19 more to reach the milestone. She would mark the second Duke women's basketball coach to reach the 200-win plateau as Debbie Leonard notched 212 victories in 15 seasons. Goestenkors has notched 181 wins in only nine seasons.
Blue Devils Welcome No. 1 Rated Recruiting Class...
For the second year in a row, the Duke women's basketball staff has brought in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. The 1999-00 freshman class was tabbed as high as No. 4 by Blue Star Report and its latest 2000-01 class was rated No. 1 by Athlon Sports.
The 2000-01 freshman class is made up of five All-Americas, five Nike All-Americas, four USA Today All-Americas, three WBCA All-Americas, two L' adidas All-America's, and one USA Junior World Championship team member.
The class is made up of Alana Beard (Frierson, La.), Iciss Tillis (Tulsa, Okla.), Rometra Craig (Portola Valley, Calif.), Vicki Krapohl (Mount Pleasant, Mich.), and Crystal White (Clinton Township, Mich.).
The Injury Bug...
Over the course of the preseason practice, the Blue Devils were hit with a number of injuries. Senior Rochelle Parent missed a week of practice with a sprained ankle, sophomore Michele Matyasovsky missed three weeks of practice with a broken finger and a sprained ankle, and junior Krista Gingrich has a torn calf muscle and has missed the last five weeks of practice. She began practicing with the team on Nov. 19 and is listed as questionable for the Duke Classic.
Duke Boasts Tri-Captains for First Time Under Gail Goestenkors...
For the first time under the direction of Gail Goestenkors, the Blue Devils will boast tri-captains in seniors Georgia Schweitzer, Missy West, and Rochelle Parent. It marks the second consecutive year West, a fifth-year senior, has been selected captain.
West Returns for Fifth Year...
After the 1999-00 season concluded, senior Missy West had a decision to make ... Do I go ahead and graduate or come back and play one final year for Duke? West decided to stay for a fifth year and the Blue Devils gladly welcome West back for another year. The senior played a huge role in leading Duke to its first ACC Tournament Championship and is the emotional leader on the squad.
After suffering through knee injuries for most of her career, she saw action in 31 games and started four last season. At the ACC Tournament she scored 42 points in three games, while hitting 13 of 25 shots from the field. This included 8 of 13 from 3-point land. She tied a ACC Tourney semifinal record with four 3-pointers vs. Georgia Tech and her 18 points versus the Seminoles in the opening round was a career-best in the ACC Tournament. West was rewarded with a second team All-Tournament selection.
In the three NCAA Tournament game, she scored 15 points (vs. Campbell), 11 points (vs. Western Kentucky), and 13 points (vs. LSU). In six post-season games, she averaged 13.5 points, scored in double figures in each game, and hit 15 treys.
West received a medical redshirt for the 1997-98 season and could of graduated this past May with a major in Sociology, but has decided to obtain a double major and return to the team next season. She will look to obtain degree's in Sociology and Biological Anthropology. "This is something I knew all along that I wanted to come back and play for another year," said West.
Schweitzer Returns...Preseason Honors...
Senior Georgia Schweitzer has been tabbed a Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year candidate as well as preseason second team All-America by Basketball News and third team All-America by Lindy's Magazine and Women's Basketball Journal.
The senior from Columbus, Ohio is the reigning ACC Player of the Year, after averaging 15.6 ppg., 4.0 rpg., 3.3 apg, and hitting .392 percent of her 3-point attempts. She was also selected a Kodak All-America finalist, ACC All-Tournament first-team, All-ACC first-team, Duke Classic MVP, ACC Player of the Week two times, and the Sun Splash Shootout All-Tournament team as a junior.
Schweitzer, Tillis Lead Blue Devils to 100-69 Victory Over Uralmash...
Senior Georgia Schweitzer scored 19 points and freshman Iciss Tillis added 18 points as the Duke women's basketball team routed Uralmash (Russia) 100-69 on Monday in its final exhibition game of the season in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke posted five players in double figures scoring on the night - Schweitzer (19 points), Tillis (18 points), Alana Beard (15 points), Missy West (14 points), and Sheana Mosch (10 points). Schweitzer, a Naismith Player of the Year candidate, scored her 19 points in only 22 minutes of action, while dishing out two assists, grabbing three rebounds, and notching three steals on the night.
For the second consecutive game, Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors dished out the minutes played very equally to all 13 dressed Blue Devils. No one player played more than 23 minutes of action on the night.
Tillis, who has started both games at forward, tallied 18 points for the second consecutive game and hit eight of 13 from the field. West, a fifth year senior, came off the bench to hit two treys on her way to scoring 14 points and pulling down five boards. Uralmash was led by Vera Shniukova with 21 points and Diana Gustilina with 15 points on the night.
Duke took a 46-35 lead into halftime and then about midway through the second half the Blue Devils went on a 32-7 run to break open the game and eventually won by 31 points. The run was keyed by very tough full-court defensive pressure.
Freshmen Shine in Exhibition Win Over Athletes in Action...
The Duke women's basketball team opened the 2000-01 season with a bang on Nov. 3 in Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Blue Devils demolished Athletes in Action 111-73 in an exhibition game behind stellar play from the No.1 ranked recruiting class in the nation (Athlon Sports).
Led by Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis, the freshman class tallied 65 points and hit 61% from field (25-41). The other three members of the class all played extremely well -- Rometra Craig (11 points), Vicki Krapohl (5 points), and Crystal White (3 points). Beard finished with a game-high 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals, while Tillis notched 18 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
The Blue Devils quickly jumped ahead of Athletes in Action as they went up 21-2 in the first five minutes and went on to a 67-34 halftime lead. Duke shot 74% from the field and 83% from three-point land in the half.
Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors played 12 players on the night and no one player played more than 21 minutes in the game. Senior Missy West hit 4-of-6 from behind the arc to finish with 15 points off the bench, while sophomore Sheana Mosch scored eight points and senior Georgia Schweitzer tallied seven points in only nine minutes of action.
Leading the way for Athletes in Action was Chantel Mize with 23 points on seven three-pointers and Crystal Carpenter with 21 points.
For the game, Duke shot 61%, committed only 14 turnovers, and hit nine three-pointers. Every Blue Devil that played scored on the night. Senior Rochelle Parent and junior Krista Gingrich did not play due to injuries.
Duke Inks Top Recruits...
Duke University women's basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors announced on Nov. 15, 2000 the signing of two of the top high school basketball players in the country - Monique Curry (Potomac, Md.) and Wynter Whitley (Atlanta, Ga.). Curry and Whitley will attend Duke in the fall of 2001 and play basketball for the current No. 3 ranked Blue Devils.
"Both Wynter and Monique are very gifted players," said Goestenkors. "They are not only athletic but very skilled as well. Each will give us an added dimension of strength that we don't possess much of right now. They are both very powerful, physical players that can hit the three-pointer and will fit very well into our five-out motion style play."
Curry, a 6-0 shooting guard/wing, is out of The Bullis School in Potomac, Md. where she averaged 190 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists as a junior. She guided The Bullis School to a 27-2 record and to the Independent School League regular season and tournament titles for the first time in the school history, while being named Player of the Year by the Washington Post. Last summer, Curry was selected MVP at the adidas Camp in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"Monique is one of the most physically gifted players we have ever signed," said Goestenkors. "She is a perfect motion player because she is smart, can hit the three, penetrates very well, finishes, and can post up. She is also a very unselfish player, which will make it very difficult for other teams to defend. Monique will fit into our style of play of running and pressing as well."
As a sophomore, she averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds a game and her freshman year scored at a 18.3 clip. Curry has performed as well in the classroom as on the court posting a 3.4 grade-point-average. She is ranked No. 3 in the All-Star Girls Report's (ASGR) Top 150 Prep Prospects. She is the highest ranked high school player to sign with the Blue Devils.
Whitley is a 6-2 power forward from Holy Innocents Episcopal in Atlanta, Ga. She is currently ranked No. 5 in the FoxStudentSports.com top 40 seniors and No. 15 in the ASGR top 15 prep rankings, after averaging 22.1 points and 8.9 rebounds as a junior. Whitley guided her team to a 23-5 record and earned All-Region, All-State, and Class A Player of the Year honors.
"Wynter is a 6-2 power forward who is stronger than most of the post players we have on the team," said Goestenkors. "She can take her hits on the inside and finish with contact as well as play out on the perimeter, hit the three-point shot, and make good decisions with the basketball. She is someone that will add another dimension to our team with her physical play."
Her sophomore year Whitley averaged 24.1 points and 10.2 rebounds and led her team to a 30-4 record and the Class A State Championship title. She was also named MVP of the state tournament, first-team All-State, Class 6A Player of the Year, and All-Region as a sophomore. For the past two years in a row, Whitley has been selected the Atlanta Journal & Constitution Player of the Year for Fulton County and USA Today rated her as one of the top juniors in the nation in 2000. She carries a 3.5 grade-point-average in the classroom.
Duke's recruiting class will once again rank near the top in the nation with Curry and Whitley signing. Last year's class was tabbed No. 1 in the nation by Athlon Sports, while the 1999-00 class was rated as high as No. 4 by the Blue Star Report.
Welcome Back Starters...
The Blue Devils will welcome back four starters off their 26-8 team from a year ago -- Georgia Schweitzer, Krista Gingrich, Rochelle Parent, and Sheana Mosch bring key experience to a squad that has 10 freshmen and sophomores on the roster.
Among the starters returning, Duke also returns All-ACC Freshman team member is Michele Matyasovsky, a 2000 ACC All-Tournament second-team member, the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in 2000-01, and sophomores Lello Gebisa, LaNedra Brown, and Olga Gvozdenovic.
Duke returns 59.2 points per game, while losing only 15.3 ppg.
Inside the Numbers...
Duke's Gail Goestenkors has led her squads to 81 victories (prior to 2000-01) over the last three years, which ranks seventh in Division I. Duke has totaled 61 ACC regular season victories the last five years to lead the ACC. The Blue Devils have tallied 129 overall wins the last six years to lead the ACC (numbers include this season).

The Record Watch...
Senior Georgia Schweitzer will be making attempts each game during the 2000-01 season to break Duke career records. The Columbus, Ohio native needs 40 more points to move into 10th place in points, 48 more field goals for 10th place, six more field goals attempted for eighth place, 16 more 3-point field goals to notch the record, 57 three-point field goals attempted to claim the record, and the list goes on ... (the numbers in parentheses denotes the current number Schweitzer has).
Junior Krista Gingrich ranks ninth on the career 3-point field goals made list (68) and ninth in 3-point field goals attempted (188). Senior Rochelle Parent currently ranks third in career field goal percentage (.597) and the record is .630 by Tyish Hall.
Other Trivia...
Duke has won the past 38 straight games in which it has held opponents to under 60 points scoring. The last loss came on February 28, 1998 to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament (52-56). In the last three seasons Duke is a perfect 16-0 when playing on Monday's. Dating back the last three years Duke is 76-6 when leading at the end of the first half.
20 Wins, Once Again!...
With Duke's victory on Feb. 24, 2000 at Wake Forest it gave Duke 20 victories for the season. It marked the fifth time Duke has notched 20 or more wins since Gail Goestenkors arrived in 1992-93. Before Goestenkors arrived, the Duke women's basketball program had only reached the 20-win mark one time (1985-86, 21-9) with Debbie Leonard as head coach.

In 1999-2000 the Blue Devils scored 80 or more points in 11 games and posted an unblemished 11-0 record in those games. So far this season Duke has scored 80 or more points in three of its five games, while posting a 5-0 record.
Devilish Streak...
Dating back to Nov. 23, 1998, Duke has won 61 of the last 73 games. In the streak, Duke won a school-record 16 games in a row (in 1998-99) and had its 15-game win streak broken Jan. 20, 2000 at N.C. State. In ACC regular season play, Duke has won 40 of the last 48 games dating back to the 1997-98 season.
Looking Back at the Year 1999...
The Blue Devils notched a 32-4 overall record in the year of 1999 with their victory over Georgetown on December 30, 1999. It is the best record of any year with the next closest being in 1996 (23-8). In 1999 regular season play Duke was 25-2.
Blue Devils Posted Best Start in 1999-00...
The 1999-2000 Blue Devils began the season with the best start in the school history (16-1). The 1994-95, 1995-96, and 1987-88 teams began the season with 12-1 records and then lost their 14th games of the season. The 1987-88 team began the season with a 12-0 record and then the Blue Devils traveled to Maryland and lost (83-73) and Wake Forest (58-57). The 1995-96 team ended up finishing with a 26-7 record, 1994-95 finished with a 22-9 record, and the 1987-88 had a 17-11 record.
