CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- For the fourth consecutive year the Duke University women's golf team brought home the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational title as the Blue Devils came away with a 19-stroke victory on Sunday, October 8 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took co-medalist honors as the two shot a final round 75 in cold, windy conditions at the Finley Golf Course. The two Blue Devils were even for all three days shooting 73-72-75=220 (+4). The victory for Hardin is her first collegiate win in two tournaments played, while Hannemann picked up the medalist honor for the second time in the last three years at the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational.
Most of the scores on day three inflated greatly due to the cold and windy weather as Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) finished tied for eighth (75-69-82=226, +10), Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) finished tied for 16th (74-77-80=231, +15), and Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) finished tied for 41st (81-80-79=240, +24). Sophomore Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) played as an individual and finished tied for 16th overall (73-78-80=231, +15).
Rounding out the top five team finishers were Duke (894), Tennessee (913), Georgia (922), South Florida (932), and Furman (935). The victory for the Blue Devils is the second in as many tournaments played with Duke winning The Preview on Sept. 15-16.
The Blue Devils will next travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to play in the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate hosted by the University of Tennessee on Oct. 13-15.
