Vanderbilt Upsets Duke 2-0 in Women's Soccer

DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Kat Carroll scored her seventh goal of the season
in the fourth minute and that proved to be the game-winner as Vanderbilt
upset No. 23-ranked Duke 2-0 on Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium in front
of 879 fans. The win improves Vanderbilt to 11-8, 5-4 in the SEC, while Duke
drops to 12-6, 4-3 ACC.
Carroll gave Vanderbilt the early lead at the 4:21 mark when she beat Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallis (Marlboro, Mass.) with a shot from 30 yards out to give Vanderbilt the 1-0 lead. The play was assisted by freshman Laura Hershenow and sophomore Jen Talavera.
Both teams were very physical the entire game as 35 fouls were called, 17 against Duke and 18 against Vanderbilt.
The Commodores sealed the victory in the 88th minute when freshman Emily Wilpers collected a pass from sophomore Kat Caroll, beat a Duke defender and then beat Dallis on a breakaway.
Duke will return to action in the ACC Women's Soccer Championship on Thurs., Nov. 2 at Koskinen Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
