Duke '00 In Boston asks: In terms of pre-season goals, has this year been more or less successful than you anticipated? What do you have left to accomplish in order to consider the season a success?
Answer: Our goal was to end higher in the Atlantic Coast Conference than last year. Although we ended up fifth in the ACC, we feel very good that we were a bounce away from finishing second in the conference. To consider this season a success, we would like have a good run in both the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament.
Frank Smith asks: Who has made the biggest impact on your team this season and why?
Answer: Thora Helgadottir, a freshman goalkeeper from Iceland. She adds an attacking dimension not usually looked at from a goalkeeper.
Moses Chase asks: Do you think your team can put the past few games behind them and focus enough to win the upcoming tournament?
Answer: Yes. We feel we have been playing well enought to win. Now we have to make our breaks in order to move forward.
Jim Robertson asks: Do you feel you have already secured a bid into the NCAA Tournament? If not, how many matches must you win in the ACC Tournament to feel comfortable?
Answer: Three weeks ago I felt we were in the NCAA tournament, but with our recent results, it has made me a little more nervous.
Christopher Jacobs asks: Coach Hempen: What have been the factors in Sarah Pickens' ability to score big goals for your team?
Answer: A rekindled confidence in her own ability.
Ashley Brookings asks: Coach -- What kind of impact has Kim Daws had on your program? Good luck in the tournament!
Answer: Kim is an outstanding soccer player. I think she also is believing in herself more this final season. She has outstanding vision in a soccer sense that is not something you can coach.
Sarah Jennings asks: Hi Coach, what has surprised you most about this current team?
Answer: It does not surprise me that they have refocused after disappointment which has allowed us to remain competitive the rest of the season.
katie duracky asks: when do you recommend a soccer player send a college coach such as yourself a resume about themselves and what is most important on it? what if they want to be recognized by a coach but don't have their sat or act scores or club schedule yet?
Answer: We here from kids as early as eighth grade, which is a little early. At the U-16 level, that is when we begin to seriously pay attention. Academic information, as well as club soccer and olympic development information is also a great help. We cannot do anything without a schedule and if act or sat scores are not available, you will have to get them to use as soon as possible.
andi melde asks: hi coach hampton. are you excited for a bunch of your old players to come visit you this weekend, during acc's? and also, are you going to let them play on the game field, with the big goals, because i hear that's what they want to do!!!
Answer: Andi, it is always a pleasure to see your smiling face back on the Duke campus, where the legend lives on! Andi, NO!!!
Robbi Arnold asks: Hey coach Hempen i was wondering how big of and impact Allison Sanders has had on the team coming back from 3 knee surgeries and finally able to perform for you and live up to her great expectations coming in here at duke. Allison is a great player!!!!!
Answer: Allison is a medical miracle! At this point in her life, anything we get from Allison is a bonus, and you are correct, she is a great player.
David (Durham) asks: Help me understand the game better. When I'm watching Duke play without the outside mids, what should I be looking for in terms of how Duke attacks offensively (when it's working well!)?
Answer: Overlapping outside backs and the releasing of one of the three central mids into the attack.
A.D. Pearson asks: Coach Hempen, First of all let me state how excited we all were that you have remained as head coach of the Duke Women's program! My question is, with the obvious growth of women's soccer in our nation, what immediate impact do you see a women's professional league having on this area and the national scene as well? Take care I look forward to talking with soon! AD
Answer: I think you will find that collegiate women's soccer will become even more competitive than it already is. These girls that have been playing soccer all there life, now have a legitimate professional league to look forward to. The mix of the college game and the professional game will greatly enhance the United States ability to stay at the top of the world game.
Adam Jochelson asks: Hey Bill, How's it going?
Answer: Good adam, hope you are having a good day!
Adam Davis asks: What are some of your fondest memories in coaching?
Answer: The game that the team plays well and everybody plays and contributes. Those moments are few and far between, but when they happen, it is like magic.
Steve Tilley asks: It appears that the Tarheels are not as strong this year. What do you think of Duke's chances in the upcoming tournaments?
Answer: I would guess that are chances are as good as anyone else in the ACC. We hope that playing on our home field gives us somewhat of an advantage.
Tricky Pick asks: bill, i was wondering how much you think we are going to beat virginia by this thursday... four or five?
Answer: It is completely up to #17!
Lindie Brown asks: Coach, who are the best players in women's soccer today?
Answer: In college, we have to look at many of the ACC players: Meridith Florance, Alyssa Ramsey, Carly Fuller, Kim Daws, Deliah Arrington, Emily Taggart, Jolene Charleton, Emma Breland, just to name a few. Outside the conference, Anne Makinen of Notre Dame, Danielle Slaton of Santa Clara, Carolina Putz of Washington, to show you that the talent is spread throughout the country.
Cliff Blook asks: hey coach, has your team ever played in Oregon? its a great place
Answer: Yes, in 1995 we played in the Portland Tournament against Washington and Portland. We enjoyed seeing that beautiful waterfall just outside Portland.
Answer: Yes, in 1995 we played in the Portland Tournament against Washington and Portland. We enjoyed seeing that beautiful waterfall just outside Portland.
Adam Jochelson asks: Just the other day, I was rereading the article about that first big win over UNC. That was certainly a magic moment. I think about that any time people think a team is invincible.
Answer: It was a night that members of the 1994 team will never forget.
Margie Molloy asks: Hi Coach Hempen, I just wanted to let you know that you should be very proud of the wonderful girls on your soccer team. My six year old daughter Kiera was hospitalized at Duke for 11 days in October. Two of your players-Kasey Truman and Susan Kraeger stopped into her room for a visit. They took Kiera's mind off her discomfort and sat talking with her about her friends, school etc. Kiera is looking forward to coming to a soccer game soon. I am hoping to take her to one at the end of this week. I will check the schedule. I emailed the girls and encouraged them to continue their visits to the pediatric unit because I know that it meant alot to Kiera. Please pass this word on to them and the other members of the team. Good Luck with the season. We hope to be at a game in the near future! Margie Molloy
Answer: Thanks Margie. Kasey and Susan are both great kids and we feel very fortunate that they are a part of our program. I hope Kiera can help the cheering section root the Blue Devils on to victory.
Thank you for all your questions. I look forward to chatting again soon on GoDuke.com.
