CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.--The 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils women's soccer team dropped their second consecutive ACC game as they were defeated by the 16th ranked Virginia Cavaliers 4-3 on Saturday night, October 21, at Klockner Stadium. With the win, Virginia improves to 9-7, 3-3 in the ACC, while Duke drops to 11-5, 4-3 in the ACC.
Duke jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Carly Fuller (Portland, Oregon) scored her sixth goal of the seasonon an assist from senior Kim Daws (Northridge, Calif.) at 6:43. Freshman Gwendolyn Oxenham (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) headed home Daws' corner kick at 11:54 to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.
The two teams traded possession for the next 18 minutes until Virginia sophomore Alyssa Benitez took a feed from junior Darci Borski and riffled a shot past Duke freshman goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir (Kopavogur, Iceland).
Virginia struck first in the the second half when senior Katie Tracy received the ball at the top of the box after a deflection and hammered home her fourth goal of the season at 52:41 to tie the score at 2-2. The Cavaliers then took its first lead of the match when freshman Erin Engelhardt scored off a feed from freshman Sarah Lane at 62:47.
The Cavaliers' lead was short lived as junior Sarah Pickens (Greensboro, N.C.) answered just eight minutes later as she scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season on a breakaway to knot the score at 3-3.
Virginia took the lead for good when Benitez beat a number of Blue Devil defenders and slid a shot under Helgadottir for her second goal of the game at 80:32.
Duke will return to action on Wed. Oct. 25, when the Blue Devils host the University of North Carolina at Charlotte at Koskinen Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
