Trailing 67-66 with 3:01 to go, Boston College used a Cal Bouchard three-pointer followed by Alissa Murphy's steal and Becky Gottstein's layup to go up 71-67. Duke's Georgia Schweitzer nailed a three-pointer to cut the Eagles lead to one at 71-70 with 1:02 to go, but the Eagles answered two free throws each from Jamie Courneyor, BouchardBrianne Stepherson after several Duke three-point attempts.
"I'm very impressed with Boston College," Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors said. "I felt like they had great guards and very solid post players. They share the ball very well. The guards can shoot the three and they can penetrate. It seems like they always find a way to find the open player. We lost to an excellent team."
"I feel like I've seen improvement in our team from Monday's game. I feel like we're getting better. When you're playing a good team like Boston College, you have to do the little things to be successful- like make your free throws."
Duke hit only 57.9 percent (11-19) of its free throw attempts while the visiting Eagles connected on 84 percent (21-25) of their attempts.
Boston College scored the final eight points of the first half to go up 48-39 at halftime. The Eagles shot a blazing 62.1 percent (18-29) from the floor in the first half.
"We didn't end the first half the way a smart team does," Goestenkors said. "We turned the ball over a couple of times, we got a couple of fouls and they hit their free throws. The last three-and-a-half minutes were not good for us. We usually pride ourselves on the way we end halves and end games. We'll learn from this and we'll get better."
Duke quickly battled back in the second half and eventually took the lead with two free throws from Sheana Mosch at the 10:46 mark.
The Blue Devils were led by Georgia Schweitzer's 21 points and 3-8 three-point shooting. Rochelle Parent finished with the first double-double of her career, adding 11 points and 11 rebounds. Peppi Browne added nine pints and 10 rebounds. Boston College's Jamie Courneyor finished with a game-high 21 points followed by Cal Bouchard's 20 and Alissa Murphy's 17.
Duke is next in action at home against Vanderbilt on November 24 at 7 p.m.
