2025 Week of Service
Duke Athletics staff and student-athletes are invited to participate in our annual Week of Service from Monday, April 14 to Saturday, April 19, 2025. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to our Durham community and make a positive difference. Join us in a variety of impactful opportunities throughout the week:
All Week: Shoe Drive
In partnership with the Duke Sustainable Athletics Group, we're conducting a shoe drive during our Week of Service. Donate your gently used or end-of-life athletic shoes in collection bins located in team locker rooms and the Scott Family Athletics Performance Center lobby between April 14-19. Your donations will support the MORE Foundation and Nike Grind, aiding in environmental restoration and recycling efforts.

Monday, April 14
Emily K Center
- Time: 3-4 p.m.
- Address: 904 W Chapel Hill St, Durham, NC 27701
- Service: Volunteers will participate by playing sports in the gym or board games in the classroom with Pioneer Scholar students. This time is designed for the students to enjoy open gym before their programming starts, under the supervision of staff.
- Description: The Emily Krzyzewski Center, a nonprofit organization in Durham, implements four distinct programs designed to build on the academic, career, and leadership potential of students traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Their Pioneer Scholars program serves elementary and middle school students aspiring to attend college.
Duke Cancer Center - Patient Support
- Time: 1-3:30 p.m. & 2:30-4 p.m.
- Address: 20 Medicine Circle, Durham NC
- Parking: 302 Trent Dr, Durham, NC 27710 (Please carpool if possible)
- Service: Athletes have the opportunity to partner with volunteers to support chemotherapy patients during their 3 to 5-hour infusion treatments by sharing information about the Duke Cancer Patient Support Program, the Teen & Young Adult Oncology Program, and other resources while also offering conversation and distributing activity kits. They can assist in assembling both activity kits, which are a favorite among patients, and legacy items like thumbprint heart kits for families. Additionally, athletes can help welcome patients and caregivers during pet therapy visits in the chemotherapy infusion area and Patient Resource Center. They can also join the Recreation Therapy activity group in the inpatient area, engaging patients in arts, crafts, and games like cornhole to provide comfort and connection during their treatment journey.

Tuesday, April 15
Open Table - Free Store (FULL)
- Time: 9-11:30 a.m.
- Address: 215 N. Church St
- Service: Assist Open Table Ministry in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in Durham, N.C. Volunteers help with tasks like check-in, line monitoring, hospitality and the shower truck. Opportunities for bag assembly and sorting room tasks are available.

Ronald McDonald House
- Time: 9:30-11:30 a.m.

- Service: Serve up love in the Ronald McDonald House kitchen! The smell of freshly made treats is a wonderful way to support RMHC guest families. Simply pick your favorite recipe(s), pack your ingredients, and come on over to prepare your treats at RMH. The House has baked supplies and a four-station kitchen with plenty of space.
- Description: The mission of RMHC is to create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families. Our vision is a world where all children have access to medical care and their families are supported and actively involved in their children’s care.
Duke Campus Farm
- Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- Address: 4934 Friends School Rd, Durham, NC 27705
- Service: Come join us in the fields to lose track of time, be outdoors, practice embodied work, and experience profound community with plants, soil, and humans! Absolutely no farming experience is necessary. We have tasks for most ages and abilities.
- Description: The Duke Campus Farm is a one-acre working farm owned and operated by Duke University that provides sustainably grown produce and food systems education for Duke and its surrounding communities. More important than the thousands of pounds of food that we grow, however, are the opportunities the farm provides for engaging and re-imagining the ways we cultivate, access, value, and think about food.
- Attire: Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothing you feel comfortable getting dirty in. Our space is exposed to the elements, so be prepared for the weather!
Boys and Girls Clubs
- Time: 3:30pm – 5pm
- Address: 1010 Martin Luther King Jr. Pkwy, Ste. 300, Durham NC 27713
- Service: Volunteers are needed to help program leaders with various lessons, programs, and activities. They also help with homework and classroom worksheets. Classrooms include K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, middle school, and teens.
- Description: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and protecting children while preserving the beauty and innocence of childhood. Volunteers will assist with the After-School program, which helps youth achieve academic success and develop life skills.
Thursday, April 17
SEEDS
- Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
- Address: 706 Gilbert St, Durham, NC 27701
- Service: Farming and gardening involve physical work so please be prepared to move! You may be preparing beds, planting, harvesting, tending vegetables, turning & sifting compost, and cleaning up.
- Description: Founded in 1994, SEEDS is a two-acre urban garden and kitchen classroom in the heart of Durham. SEEDS develops the capacity of young people to respect life, the earth, and each other through growing, cooking, and sharing food.
Durham Community Food Pantry (FULL)
- Time: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
- Address: 2020 Chapel Hill Rd #30, Durham, NC 27707
- Description: The Durham Community Food Pantry, a program of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, works to end food insecurity in Durham and Orange counties. The program is a collaborative effort engaging multiple partners through Durham and Orange counties to address this incredibly important need. Opening in May 2019, the DCFP has grown rapidly, distributing over 1.25 million pounds of food per year.

Friday, April 18
Duke Cancer Center (Part 2)
- Time: 12:00pm – 4pm
- Location: Scharf Hall
- Service: Volunteers will rotate between various activity stations designed to support while in Scharf Hall. They will also assist in assembling these activity kits and legacy items, such as thumbprint heart kits for loved ones to create keepsakes for family members nearing the end of life. The event will feature Pets at Duke, a therapy dog program, with handler-dog teams providing comfort to patients and caregivers. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to create friendship bracelets and write encouragement cards for hospitalized teens and young adults diagnosed with cancer.
Saturday, April 19
Root Causes: Healthy Harvest (FULL)
- Time: 9:30-11:30 a.m.
- Address: 404 Gattis St, Durham, NC 27701
- Description: Healthy Harvest is a student-run community garden at Duke University, part of Root Causes and the Church of Philadelphia. We grow fresh, organic produce to help combat food insecurity in Durham. A typical workday involves planting crops, weeding garden beds, and maintaining the garden at 1309 Jackson Street. Volunteers work together to cultivate the land, and the produce is donated to the community through initiatives like the Root Causes Fresh Produce Program. It’s a hands-on way to make a direct impact and support the local community.
