DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has announced the addition of Kevin Lehman and the promotion of Sarah Smoak to the women's basketball staff, effective immediately. Lehman joins the staff as an Assistant Director of Basketball Operations, and Smoak will now serve as Director of Marketing/Assistant Director of Basketball Operations for women's basketball after having interned for the team in 2008-09.
Smoak joined the Blue Devils as an intern last year after her time as an assistant coach at Peace College for the 2007-08 season. In addition to last year's internship, Smoak has served as a basketball camp instructor for Duke on seven different occasions and also completed an internship with the men's basketball program at the 2005 summer camps.
In her new post, Smoak will develop and execute marketing and promotional concepts with women's basketball along with the day-to-day operations of the program, assist with game and practice preparation, help arrange team community involvement and assist with on-campus recruiting.
"I'm very excited for Sarah," McCallie said. "She has really stepped into an incredible marketing role for our program. She is a coach at heart, but she is passionate about Duke, she loves Duke and the program, and she is passionate about selling the program. I'm really excited for her to have this experience and for us to benefit from her enthusiasm."
The Charlotte, N.C. native gathered a great deal of her enthusiasm for basketball at Lynchburg College where she was a four-year letterwinner, earned ODAC Academic All-Conference honors in 2005-06, and was named to the ODAC Senior All-Star team. Adding to this list of accomplishments, Smoak was also team captain as a senior and was selected to the Director of Athletics Honor Roll. Also, prior to her assistant coaching stint at Peace College in 2007-08, Smoak worked for Nike.
A Lancaster, Ohio native, Lehman comes to Duke after two years as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Prior to his time at Eastern Michigan, Lehman worked as a student manager and assistant video coordinator for the Michigan State University women's basketball program while earning his undergraduate degree. In 2007, Lehman graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.
"Kevin is brand new, excited, and working so hard," McCallie commented. "Whether it's planning an on-campus visit, trying to coordinate the players, assisting with the schedule and travel: he brings a great work ethic. He is incredibly low maintenance, willing to do whatever it takes, not concerned about what the task at hand is, but rather to do it at its very best."
Lehman will assist with on-campus recruiting, recruiting correspondence, team travel, special event functions and planning, game day operations, video editing and coordinating the scout team.
