1. Duke overcomes a devastating late-season injury to starting center Carlos Boozer by retooling its lineup and style of play for a postseason run to the school's third NCAA basketball championship.

2. Just before the start of his 22nd season, basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski becomes the first person with a Duke affiliation to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and he signs a lifetime contract with the Blue Devils.
3. Shane Battier, consensus national player of the year and the ACC athlete of the year, becomes the 10th Duke basketball sensation to have his jersey number retired.
4. Candy Hannemann wins the NCAA women's golf championship and the Honda Award for her her sport, while also finishing as the low amateur at the U.S. Women's Open.
5. At the ACC SpringFest in Orlando, Duke dominates by claiming 2001 conference championships in men's lacrosse, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's golf while finishing as runnerup in women's lacrosse.
6. The Blue Devils show their ACC basketball supremacy when the men win the regular season for the fifth straight year and the tournament for the third straight time, while the women win their second consecutive league tournament. The Devils have the ACC player of the year (Battier, Georgia Schweitzer) and the rookie of the year (Chris Duhon, Alana Beard) in both sports.
7. Not all the top stories are positive, as Duke football suffers through an 0-11 season and sees its losing streak stretch to 23 games.
8. Record-setting senior pole vaulter Jillian Schwartz goes out in a blaze of glory by winning ACC titles indoors and outdoors, earning All-America honors indoors and outdoors, and tying for second place at the NCAA championship in her final college meet.
9. Duke pays homage to its great basketball heritage with several impressive events, including a 10-year reunion for the 1991 national championship team, the christening of the Bubas Concourse at Cameron Indoor Stadium, a summer All-Star Charity game featuring NBA Blue Devils, and the induction of 18 former greats in the new Hall of Honor.

14. The Duke-Maryland basketball rivalry rises to a new level with four epic games during the 2001 season. The Devils win three, including astonishing comebacks in College Park and at the Final Four.
15. Duke plays the splendid host to a pair of major national sporting events, the NCAA men's golf championship and the annual McDonald's High School All-America basketball game.
