Brennan O’Neill enjoyed one of the top offensive seasons in Duke men’s lacrosse history in leading the Blue Devils to the ACC title and a spot in the NCAA championship game, where they fell to Notre Dame on Memorial Day.
O’Neill became Duke’s third all-time winner of the prestigious Tewaaraton Award as the national player of the year in pacing the Blue Devils to a 16-3 record and the program’s 14th appearance at Championship Weekend. He led the nation in total points scored with 97, on 55 goals and 42 assists. He was the only Division I player this season to rank in the top 20 in goals (2.89), assists (2.21) and points (5.11) per game.
Now a three-time All-ACC pick and former ACC Freshman of the Year, O’Neill became the fastest player in Duke history to score 100 career goals, as he has now registered 153 goals and 73 assists in his 53 games across three seasons. He will enter his senior year on a 28-game goal scoring streak.
O’Neill scored three hat tricks in Duke’s six ACC games, with a dominant six goals and three assists in a victory over No. 1 Virginia. He had another six-goal outing in the NCAA quarterfinals to lead Duke over Michigan and earn the spot in Championship Weekend. He totaled 11 goals and six assists in Duke’s four NCAA playoff games.
