The 2019-20 Duke women's lacrosse team was scheduled to travel down Tobacco Road to face rival North Carolina on Saturday, April 18 for its final game of the regular season. Let's take a look back at the same contest six years ago, a 7-6 Duke win in overtime in Chapel Hill. Check out the original GoDuke.com release here.
It was the first women's lacrosse game to be played at North Carolina's Kenan Memorial Stadium, typically the Tar Heels football stadium, and the Blue Devils spoiled the party.
Senior
Kerrin Maurer scored with 26 seconds remaining in overtime to give the eighth-ranked Blue Devils a 7-6 win over the third-ranked Tar Heels in a low-scoring game. The goal was Maurer's third on the day, matching
Sydney Peterson's three-goal performance.
"To come here and play in Kenan against a great Carolina team and execute a game plan as well as they did was just a great effort," said head coach
Kerstin Kimel after the game. "Our team really understands that it's such a privilege to be part of such an awesome rivalry and because of all the special things that come along with it, you can get great finishes like this."
Duke opened the contest with a Maurer goal at 25:43 in the first half. North Carolina answered to tie, but the Blue Devils responded with three more to take a 4-1 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Tar Heels went on a 5-0 run, spanning over halftime to take their largest lead of the contest, 6-4, with 23:23 remaining. Peterson answered, scoring twice in a matter of eight minutes to tie the game with 4:12 left.
At 6-6, the game entered overtime. It was the second consecutive year that the rivals went to overtime with North Carolina scraping by the year before.
In overtime, North Carolina won the draw but a critical caused turnover by Peterson gave the Blue Devils possession. With possession and her back to the goal just outside the crease, Maurer turned to the middle and skipped a shot off the turf past the North Carolina goalie with 26 seconds remaining.
Duke had to hold the Tar Heels scoreless for the final 26 seconds to leave Chapel Hill with a win. North Carolina won the ensuing draw, but the Duke defense held strong to keep the Tar Heels off the board and secure the win.
"When I look back and think about the game against Carolina, the thing that sticks out is the feeling I had with the team," Duke goalie
Kelsey Duryea said. "I really don't remember how I did personally, I just remember the feeling in the locker room before the game, the energy on the field and ultimately the overtime goal being scored. That game was the embodiment of Duke Lax Love. Everyone did their job, fought hard for 60+ minutes and we came out on top!"
Duryea played all 66 minutes for the Blue Devils in goal, allowing just six goals. Overall, the Duke defense as a whole allowed just 12 shots, tying the Tar Heel's season low for the season. Peterson and
Isabelle Montagne recorded two caused turnovers each.
Maurer led the Blue Devils with four points on three goals and an assist. Peterson added three goals while
Erin Tenneson had one.
Kelci Smesko and
Chelsea Landon each added an assist.
Duke totaled more shots (23-12), ground balls (21-14) and draw controls than the Tar Heels (9-8). Maurer led the Blue Devils with four groundballs while Peterson followed with three.
