DURHAM, N.C. - Coming off leading Duke to two victories against top-15 nationally ranked opponents, senior
Jasmine Thomas has been named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week on Monday by a vote of the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Thomas, a product of Fairfax, Va., guided third-ranked Duke to a 54-48 win over 10th-ranked Kentucky and a 71-64 victory over 14th-ranked Maryland. The honor for Thomas is the first of the season and second in her career.
On the week, Thomas averaged 23.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks. The 5-9 guard was at her best in the clutch in both games for the Blue Devils.
Against Kentucky, Thomas had 24 points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals. She hit a jumper with 1:33 remaining to tie the score and hit four free throws over the final 15 seconds to seal the win. Thomas also tallied three blocks over the final 6:32 of the game, including a swat with nine seconds remaining on a potential game-tying three-point field goal attempt.
Thomas had 22 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals versus Maryland. With Duke down by two points late in the second half, Thomas drained a three-pointer with 1:58 left to give Duke a one-point lead, 61-60. She then hit an off-balance jumper with 1:10 left to give Duke a three-point lead, 63-60. Thomas totaled seven points over the final 1:58 to clinch the win for the Blue Devils, which improved to 15-0 on the year and won their 17th straight in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
A National Player of the Year and All-America candidate, Thomas is averaging 15.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.0 blocks on the season. Against ranked opponents, Thomas is averaging 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.8 steals. Duke currently owns the No. 1 ranked strength of schedule and is No. 1 in the RPI.
Georgia Tech's Tyaunna Marshall was selected ACC Rookie of the Week.
Duke will next hit the road for two road ACC contests as the Blue Devils will take on 21st-ranked Florida State on Friday, Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a game at Virginia Tech on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 2:00 p.m.
