DURHAM, N.C. ? U.S. Lacrosse recently announced the pool of 49 players ? including five associated with the Duke program ? that will represent the U.S. women's national teams in 2008-09, following three days of tryouts held at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
Current Blue Devils Caroline Cryer, Lindsay Gilbride, and Sarah Bullard were selected to the pool, which will be broken into Elite and Developmental teams following U.S. Lacrosse's Stars and Stripes weekend Oct. 10-13. All players named to the list are eligible to represent Team USA at the 2009 IFWLA World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic, with the final 18-player roster expected to be announced following the Champions Challenge in January.
Joining Cryer, Gilbride, and Bullard on the squad were 2006 graduates Katie Chrest and Megan Huether. Chrest returns after serving as an alternate on the 2005 World Cup team.
Cryer, who will return to Duke as a senior, is no stranger to national team competition, having played with the Elite Team in 2007 and with the Developmental Team in 2005 and 2006. Gilbride played alongside Cryer and earned tournament MVP honors at the Vail Shootout in July, while Cryer and Chrest represented the United States at the 2008 Prague Cup. Bullard enters her sophomore season with Duke, having served as the team captain of the 2007 gold medalist U-19 team.
Four-time defending NCAA Division I champions Northwestern led all schools with eight affiliated players selected.
