DURHAM, N.C. ? Now in the sixth and final week of fall practices, the Duke women's lacrosse team still has some tough fall competition ahead as it continues to make great strides since last season.
“Everything is going well and we're excited to be competing and getting ready for the spring,” said head coach Kerstin Kimel. “You can tell this team has a different makeup than last year ? we are a more veteran team.”
Aside from working out on campus four times a week, the team has participated in a few fall contests, facing North Carolina, Ohio State, Longwood, and Virginia Tech in a tournament at Duke, and taking on Notre Dame in a scrimmage before the squad split for fall break. The team also hosted an alumni game last week.
The Blue Devils will next travel to Towson University ? the site of the 2009 national championship game ? this weekend to face what Kimel called “a scrappy, tough CAA opponent.”
They will then continue the trip to Georgetown's campus to tackle the Hoyas as well as James Madison and Virginia in another fall tournament Saturday.
“Last fall we really spent a lot of time going over fundamentals,” said Kimel. “While you always have to work on those things, we've been able to ratchet up our fall play because we are overall an older, more experienced team.”
The 2009 Duke squad returns nine of 12 starters from last season, a campaign in which the Blue Devils went 13-8 (3-2 ACC) and advanced to the national semifinals for the fourth straight season.
