The Duke University women's lacrosse team opens the 2004 ACC Championships on Friday, April 23 with a 1:00 p.m. contest against North Carolina at Henry Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils, ranked seventh in the latest IWLCA poll, enter the weekend with a 10-4 record including a 3-0 mark in ACC action. North Carolina is 8-6 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
Duke topped the Tar Heels, 7-6, in double overtime early this season in Chapel Hill. Freshman Kristen Waagbo led the Blue Devils with two goals and an assist, while Katie Chrest and Meghan Miller each had a pair of goals as well. Sophomore goalie Megan Huether matched a career high with 15 saves in the win.
The all-time series with North Carolina is knotted at 6-6, with Duke winning the past two meetings. Friday's contest will be the fourth meeting in the ACC Championships between the two schools. Duke won a semifinal round game in 2001 to reach its only ACC Championship game, while North Carolina posted opening round wins in 2000 and 2002.
The other semifinal contest begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday with second-seed Virginia facing 2003 ACC champion Maryland. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, April 25 at 1:00 p.m.
