One of the most decorated multi-sport athletes in Duke history, Dave Sime excelled in baseball, football and track and field from 1956-58 and was named the ACC Athlete of the Year in 1956.
On the track, Sime was a dominant force, capturing 12 ACC championships (four indoor, eight outdoor) and earning ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship MVP honors twice (1956, 1958). A 1956 All-America selection, he set seven world records (one indoor, six outdoor) and was later named to the ACC 50th Anniversary teams for both indoor and outdoor track and field. Internationally, Sime earned a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.
In baseball, Sime led Duke to the 1957 ACC Championship, batting a team-best .376 while earning first-team all-ACC and second-team All-America honors. He also spent one season with the Blue Devil football program and was selected in the 29th round of the 1959 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
A native of Fair Lawn, N.J., Sime graduated from Duke in 1958 with a degree in psychology and later earned his medical degree from Duke in 1962. He went on to a distinguished career as an ophthalmologist in Miami.
In addition to his induction into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976, Sime was also enshrined in the Drake Relays Hall of Fame, USA Track & Field Hall of Fame, North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame.
Athletics excellence continued in the Sime family, as his son, Scott, lettered four seasons as a fullback at Duke (1981-84), and his grandson, Max McCaffrey, lettered four seasons at wide receiver (2012-15).
