As the NCAA basketball tournament progresses toward its culmination, we visit with Duke Hall of Famer Jim Spanarkel, who is in his 25th season as a television analyst for March Madness. And we are joined by a recent All-ACC Duke football player who helped the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl last month, tight end Noah Gray.

Jon Scheyer: What's amazing that Cameron is 83 years old and I've had some of the most defining moments of my life happen in Cameron and it's of course I can mention and think back to many games that I've played here and tough losses, incredible wins and when you played as well as you wanted to and sometimes you didn't and how you respond to that but the times that I remember the most are the practices, the workouts, the late nights, sometimes when you're in there by yourself. You know, look it's the most special place to see a game but it's really special when you're a player here or a coach, when you're in here at night by yourself and you just get to take in all the memories, take in all the moments and you realize how special it is to be the coach here. This is Blue Devil 360, the official podcast of Duke Athletics.
John Roth: Welcome to the February edition of Blue Devil 360. I'm John Roth bringing you this month's program from one of Duke's most iconic venues, Cameron and Dor Stadium. You just heard Coach John Shire speak about the feeling of being alone at night inside the 83 year old gym so that's my sonic backdrop for this month. It's one of the arenas busiest weeks of the winter with five basketball games across eight days as we record this both the men's and women's teams are undefeated on Coach K-court this season each with two regular season dates to play. To tip off this edition we've got Coach Shire and Coach Carol Lawson from the women's team sitting on the home bench talking basketball so let's get right to it.
Jon Scheyer: Kara, this is our third year having an incredible season. Over 20 wins now, first place in the ACC, top 10 ranking. Congrats on the year so far and we were just talking, the job's not done, a lot of work to go, a lot of work to do I should say but how are you feeling about your team this year?
SPEAKER_04: I've been really pleased with our team this year. One thing I'll say about them is they fight and they really guard and defensively we thought coming in this year, honestly that was a big weakness for us last year. I didn't think we were a good defensive team and that was on me and that was on our coaching staff. We really dedicated ourselves in the off season watching film, coming up with this defensive scheme that we felt fit our personnel and could really help us win games and the players have followed through with that and have won in some tough environments. We're pleased to be where we are but you know how it is. One game can change it and so we're hopeful that we can just keep playing with that effort.
Jon Scheyer: You talked about the defense. You talked about specifically what changes you made or what you didn't like from last year to really make it up to this point where you've had one of the stingiest defenses in the country.
SPEAKER_04: The biggest change that we made was to be more disruptive and to dictate more. I thought last year we were more of a reactive defense and more of a protective defense instead of really putting pressure on people and the players in this league, the teams in this league, if you sit back there and let them pick you apart they will. So we made some changes with that. The other thing that we introduced was a lot more full court pressure and so if you watch us play you'll see us pressing pretty much the whole game. It's not gamble go for everything type of pressure. It's just a pressure to take the temperature of the other team and see if they can handle it and I would say those are probably the two biggest just mindset changes, not even like steam changes but just like hey let's get after people that's really be disruptive.
Jon Scheyer: Alright so let's talk about year three you get hired during the pandemic where your press conference is over zoom. Yes. Right. So it's obviously that's a tough adjustment. Talk about the progress from the beginning of taking over during a challenging time to now where you know what your team is doing but also building the program.
SPEAKER_04: There's certainly a lot to navigate not just for a first year coach any coach during that time it was it was challenging. We only played four games that first season and then we've had a lot of turnover in our roster. Quite frankly the two years after that whether that was through graduation through transfers obviously the rules changed that year too so you could now have a media deluge building on transfers you could everyone got COVID years in the middle that year so my first year the world is changing. The whole thing changed. The whole world. Yeah so when I took the job you know the landscape was one way and then when I got into the job within six months all that changed and so I had experienced assistance around me which really helped and that's helped me the whole time to be quite frank. They had navigated certain things before they had a great baseline of who players were and a great foundation in terms of recruiting and then it was just finding players that were really passionate about the game and want to get better and that love competing. I think that's that's like the that's the baseline for us is we want players that really love to compete love passionate about getting better want to improve and if you find that if you're lucky enough to find enough of them I think you can do some special things so this group to this point is is playing the way that I always envisioned. I can't say I thought that year three was going to be the year that it happened. I really don't try to put timelines on things because then I think you you marry yourself to like oh well we don't have to be good until then it's like no it's be good now. That's right. But as quickly as we can be and we we've brought in a lot of talented players that fit us.
Jon Scheyer: Well for for you obviously you've played at the highest of levels and how much of the way that you have your team playing fits what your identity was as a player. I'll tell a quick backstory we actually had recruit visiting recently can't say the person's name there because of how the rules go. Yeah. But the mom said you know I actually played against care loss in high school and she just went off on me. And so she said it was the biggest deal in the world playing against you. This is back in high school but obviously your professional career college career. What would you say you take from your playing experience to translate to coaching?
SPEAKER_04: Well I would say this I don't know that I would be good in my system. I like the offense assigned a ball very much. And I like to shoot threes. Yeah. Well you like shooting threes now as a coach. I do I like to do threes now so I don't know that I would have played myself a lot as a player. I will say this about myself as a player. I really struggled on the defensive end my freshman year and you know this like it's it's hard. I mean you have you have a lot of freshmen and we have freshmen and getting that end of the floor right is is can take the whole year or close to the whole year. It's just hard and so I struggled with that my freshman year and you know I had a pretty even minutes but I would get taken out sometimes because I wasn't playing my role on the defensive end that at the level coach summit wanted me to play. And so I do kind of have to chuckle a little bit sometimes I'll be in the middle of practice and I'm yelling at somebody for not doing them like you're such a hypocrite man. Your college would be doing the same things. So I think how I played is a little different now how we played at Tennessee is very similar in terms of what we do here at Duke defense was the priority defense and rebounding. That's what wins and and so you know we did a lot of winning at Tennessee and my goal is to do a lot of winning here and so I'm not that dumb. I know I know what I was taught in what won and so that's what we try to put the focus
Jon Scheyer: on. Yeah well you mentioned coach summit I was fortunate to play for coach K two of the great coaches really and regardless of sport what's your biggest lessons you've learned from her and how you try to honor her move forward with her legacy and tree of coaching and playing.
SPEAKER_04: Most of what I do and how I run my program is influenced in some way from coach summit even though she's no longer with us and even though she wasn't alive when I became a coach. But I went to the University of Tennessee to play for her because I wanted a coach and so I thought well if you want a coach why not go play for the best coach that makes sense. So I went there and there are a couple things that that are really really come up in art in our job all the time for me. The first is accountability and being accountable as a coach you've got to be accountable for your players for your team for your staff and and and then everyone in your program has to be accountable to for their role in it. You know my players each of them are accountable to bring their best self every day and in the games they're accountable for their performances. And so we talk a lot about that like owning your mistakes and owning them right away. If you make a mistake they're going to happen but like don't try and explain it away or say he should have done that or she'd like own them and then let's get to fixing them. So I take that from her as well and the second thing I'll tell a story about her my freshman year I told you I wasn't doing very well on the defensive end and I'll never forget after the season coach summit brought me in her office and we talked about defense and you know honestly I just wasn't taking as seriously as I should have. I mean I might have been the second or third leading scorer on the team as a freshman and first team all league as a freshman like I had good stuff to what I was doing and she said you know they they asked me about voting for you for all American and I said heck no she's not an all American because you don't play both sides of the ball. She said care the one thing you got to understand about me is I will never lie for you. I will never tell somebody you're good at something like when the WNBA coaches come to me and say hey can she do this this and this if you can't do it I'm not telling them that because that's my not my word and my integrity on it that always stuck with me and that's something I share with some of my players when we reach that point in their career is like I'm not going to lie for you. You have to be good at something for me to put that stamp on you that you're ready and I think honesty and transparency and coaching is really important with your players.
Jon Scheyer: Huge. I have to ask this before you know I'll let you go but can you still play? Do you still play ever? Do you ever get out there and shoot and get out there with your with your players and do you play still at all?
SPEAKER_04: I don't play anymore.
Jon Scheyer: You're smarter than I am. I get out there. And also older.
SPEAKER_04: You really got it. You're smarter and older. But I did the first year. I did practice. Yeah. Some the first year and get out there with them and then after that I said okay. How did it feel when you're out there? Well they couldn't hurt me. I'm not saying they could have hurt me. But now I will do shooting games with them. So I will do horse or different things you make. What do you think your record is? Undefeated. Oh I know what it is. Oh yeah.
Jon Scheyer: I have not in three years. If I asked any of your players they would say the same.
SPEAKER_04: On camera maybe not. But definitely privately they say yeah I haven't lost yet.
Jon Scheyer: I love it. Well thanks for spending some time and pull for you guys like crazy and let's have a great end of the year. Let's do it. Thanks John.
John Roth: As they each point toward a great end of the year I've got a Cameron basketball trivia question for you and we'll have the answer at the end of the program. Can you name the top individual scoring game by a Duke men's player and a Duke women's player in the long history of the Serena? Think about it and listen for the answers later on. Now we've got much more to cover this month and we're going to stick with basketball for the next several minutes but from a different context. This is Black History Month and we feel fortunate to have a true Duke pioneers our next guest. C.B. Claiborne arrived at Duke in the fall of 1965 as the university's first black basketball player and student athlete and one of the first in the ACC. He played three varsity seasons under Coach Vic Bubas and graduated in the class of 1969 with a degree in mechanical engineering, went on to earn postgraduate degrees at Dartmouth, Washington and Virginia Tech and as a professor of business and marketing at Texas Southern University. He was on campus recently as part of the Black in Blue project, a Duke faculty initiative to examine the history of race and sports at Duke. During his visit he was honored at the Duke Louisville basketball game and I caught up with him at Cameron for Duke's shoot around prior to the game. We began by talking about the Black in Blue project.
SPEAKER_03: Well the essence of the Black in Blue project is looking at the contributions of black athletes to Duke University and sort of resurrecting some of that history that hasn't been told. You know I came here in 1965 there were no black athletes at Duke in 1965 when I came. A couple of guys walked on that year, one on the football team, Bill Turner who has been here for a number of years under the Divinity School but it was a long time before Duke actually recruited and brought you know a prime time athlete. So we started from a place of very little involvement in sports at the university to you know if you look today black athletes play a major role at the university.
John Roth: To me this is a great opportunity for a little oral history. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like for you and being in that kind of pioneer role of being the first black athlete on the basketball team?
SPEAKER_03: Well so as you know that's the subject of a book right Barry Jacobs wrote a book on that and it wasn't just my story, it was really the story of the times. It was what was happening in the south, what was happening at these universities in the south as they started to open up and to some degree the universities took the lead in desegregation in the south. I mean there were battles in the streets for voting rights and all kinds of things like that but it was really through sports that universities opened up and ultimately the south opened up.
John Roth: What were some of the experiences like for you in being the first on basically what was an all white campus. There might have been what a handful of other black students probably no black professors.
SPEAKER_03: When I came here there were seven black students. So there were three from two years before me and there were four from the year before me so our group came with seven black students.
John Roth: And so what was that experience like to be kind of the only ones here?
SPEAKER_03: Well it was a mixed experience, you know it's hard to characterize it but I would say there were some really eye-opening things, some really personally expanding things for me that happened during that time but they were also you know just by virtue of the times some really crushing and exclusionary things that happened at the same time. So to you know who we always talk about when the black students get together we had to go across town just to get a haircut because we couldn't walk into the student center and get a haircut you know. So it was on that level you know and it was not always that people were bad it was just the kind of systematic exclusion that was part of the environment you know 1960s in the south.
John Roth: I know you've had an opportunity to speak to students of today and you will have a chance to speak to the Duke basketball team while you're here. What are some of the things about those times that you think are important for people now to realize when you know it's like 60 years ago and you know they're parents some of their parents weren't even born then but what do you think are important things for them to learn about and know about from those times?
SPEAKER_03: Yes so I would say the number one thing is don't underrate or underestimate the opportunity that you have. Because this is an opportunity I mean not just because some people laid the groundwork for you to have this opportunity but I think this is really an opportunity for you to push it forward. So as much change as happened in the last 60 years even more can happen in the next 60 years and so I think the students here today and Coach Shire and I were just talked about that how one of the biggest concerns is that students come and they're here for a year and they leave right. When I was here everybody was a student athlete which really means that we were part of the university. We had a stake in the university and in one sense by coming to Duke we were developing our equity. If you can imagine an idea of educational equity we were here to develop that equity. We weren't here to you know go to the NBA and make a lot of money not that kind of equity but it was about educational equity. I think that educational equity does is allow us to understand something about our lives, about the social system where we live and to make a contribution to that. So when I talk about young guys having an opportunity and not missing that you know Duke is a tremendous place and I remember when I was a freshman they brought George Wallace to campus to talk and so the first question is why do I want to go here George Wallace but I learned a lot listening to him you know even though he was a staunch segregationist I learned a lot listening to him and I think the education that's afforded to students, student athletes, basketball players is you know beyond value because you build on that you know if I learned this at 18 you know at 35 just think of where I can be. So I think I would say that the one thing I would try to impress upon students is that you have a tremendous opportunity and the university is a platform to build on that opportunity.
John Roth: What do you remember about the reasons you decided to come here was one of them to take advantage of the opportunity? Did you feel like you were being a pioneer at the time? Was that something that was in your mind? Was it a chance to come to this university? What were the reasons that brought you here?
SPEAKER_03: Yes but that didn't come out of my head. That came out of my coach's head a guy named Hank Allen and Dan Bill. I remember one day I was walking into practice he called me into his office and he said play born you know you have an opportunity to do something and he started to talk to me about going to do I mean I was going to go to a HBCU he had introduced me to Cal Irvin my life was already set the captain of the basketball team from the year before me was then captain of the team at A&T so I kind of knew the path that I was on but he started to open my mind to you know these social possibilities and it's not just it's not all about playing basketball right there are other parts of your life so you can make this kind of contribution you know at 18 years old I didn't know I wasn't smart enough to know that.
John Roth: A lot of people look up to those who broke the color barrier and various sports and different other parts of society was there someone that you kind of looked up to at the time when you were young and impressionable whether it was thinking back to Jackie Robinson or Dr. King at the time or any what was there someone that you kind of emulated or looked up to the role they played in breaking color barriers.
SPEAKER_03: Well of course Jackie Robinson right but I was a big basketball fan and my favorite team was the Boston Celtics when I was growing up and I heard some of the stories about how Russell and Sam Jones and the Celtics refused to play in places where they couldn't be served and so I don't know if you know I would consider those guys that kind of role model but always I knew something about standing up for who you are and speaking up for who you are.
SPEAKER_01: Could you tell us a little bit about basketball experience from the standpoint of if there was like a moment from basketball that you'll never forget or different parts of the basketball experience playing at that particular time which was a pretty big time in Duke basketball history.
SPEAKER_03: It was a big time and I can tell you for me personally what stands out even now is when we went to UCLA and walked in Paulie Pavilion. I had never seen a gym with six full courts in the gym. Paulie was the biggest place I'd ever seen and so we were watching UCLA and I'm watching John Wooten you know with his program rolled up directing players you know and so that moment stands out in my mind even now you know.
SPEAKER_01: Being a little bit younger there's one game I always wish I could have been added in Duke history and that was the triple over time game. You already knew what I was going to say and you were obviously involved in that. What do you remember about that historic? If I remember correctly from reading in some places one of your roommates maybe a road roommate Fred Lynn was one of those stars of that game but you guys all like that was kind of one of those unbelievable games in Duke history. What do you remember about that particular day here in this gym before it was even called Cameron?
SPEAKER_03: It was my roommate on the road and we had a good rapport with each other and it was the end of the game and we were coming down and I remember everybody talks about the last play when he cut the ball and put it in so I knew that was going to happen because I had talked to Freddie about that before. I mentioned Carl Hubbard but my teammate who had gone to A&T who was the captain and I can remember being in high school and Carl saying well if I played against Kareem this is what I'll do and he'll drive down the lane and just throw it up and you don't have a guy captured. So I said Freddie look out for the ball I went down the lane and just threw it back and said Freddie and he caught it and put it in. So yeah I remember that game. I remember actually a lot about that game.
SPEAKER_01: I got to ask you guys we're wrapping up we're sitting here on one of the benches at Cameron and watching some of the coaches and managers play a little pick up after a practice and there's one guy out there named Jay Lucas who's a family is from Durham John Lucas was his dad and he's a little bit younger than you played after you probably left Duke but I'm just wondering from your time in Durham if you ever ran into the Lucas family or John Lucas when you were here at Duke playing ball.
SPEAKER_03: So John was in high school John Lucas was in high school when I was here and he was a great tennis player right you know but John loved basketball and he would always be hanging around the gym and we'd go over to over by NC Central Hillside and play John was always around. So he used to come over and I used to bring John through card gym and the tunnel to bring him in here so he could play basketball. So yeah I know John from back in the day.
SPEAKER_01: The last thing I want to ask about is just I know you don't get back to campus that much you've been I guess the last time we're here you told me it was 2019. When you do either walk onto campus now or walk into this gym now what are a couple of the main reflections that hit you being back at your alma mater you know 60 years after you were a student here is completely different place now.
SPEAKER_03: Yeah so the main thing that hits me when I walk back on this campus how proud I am of what the campus is today you know I talked a little bit about the systematic exclusion in the 60s it is proactive inclusivity now so you know when I look around Duke looks like a United Nations you know there are people from everywhere here and if you look at the teams if you look at the coaches I mean there's a lot of inclusion and that's not by accident so I think you know intentionally this university has accepted their past and built on it you know so it's a conscious process.
SPEAKER_01: CB thanks a lot for taking a few moments. I really appreciate it a whole lot thanks a lot. Okay enjoy it. During the visit coach John Shire asked Clayborn to spend a few minutes with the basketball team. In the Louisville game the Blue Devils wore black warm-up shirts with CB's number 23 and his name across the back. And in case you're wondering that game we were talking about from his career was the 1968 Duke North Carolina contest a triple overtime 87 86 Blue Devil win between two top 10 teams that is considered one of the all-time classics at the indoor stadium. Now basketball of course is not the only sport that calls Cameron home wrestling also has most of its home matches here and the Blue Devil Wrestling program has produced one of the best stories in the ACC this year. Senior heavyweight Jonah Neeson bomb entered this season with a 20 and 36 record across the last three years and no wins against ranked opponents. But this year he has proven to be one of the ACC's best. Heading into the conference championship meet March 5th and Raleigh he owns a 24 and 3 record is undefeated against other ACC heavyweights has won four of the six bouts against ranked opponents and has picked up two tournament titles earlier in the year. He was 13 and one in duels this year and ranked 17th in the nation. My chat with him took place at Cameron during a guest appearance on the Countdown to tipoff show prior to a Blue Devil basketball game.
SPEAKER_05: Well something unique to me in wrestling is I actually started it really late in my career compared to most people. I didn't start till really didn't start against serious till my junior year in high school. So coming into Duke I really didn't have a ton of experience. I didn't have a lot of technical experience so working with coach Erickson. We've really just slowed things down and just focused on the fundamentals. I've got a good stance. I move my feet well and those have been the things that have gotten me to this level. Just fundamental wrestling really nothing special.
SPEAKER_01: So were you playing a lot of other sports before wrestling caught your attention and how did wrestling catch your attention right in your junior year.
SPEAKER_05: Yeah so I played ice hockey my whole life from allentown Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is a big wrestling state and my high school I wanted to play a sport for the school where the Letterman jacket and I tried different things. I tried track and that didn't work out and eventually I ran into wrestling and I loved it. I love the grind. It's real tough and I've found that I can make big gains very fast because it's an independent sport and it's really just survival of the fittest whoever can work harder will win. You don't have to have any innate abilities.
SPEAKER_01: You look pretty fit and I know you're listed as the wrestler in the 285 pound weight class. To me I always thought is that still called the heavyweight class or is it technically 285 and how close are you to 285.
SPEAKER_05: Right yeah it's the heavyweight weight class. I'm about 260 pounds right now but I'm looking to keep packing on muscle and keep getting bigger and stronger.
SPEAKER_01: So I'm assuming since you didn't have that much experience that part of this getting back to fundamentals is to kind of help build experience and you've been wrestling now for four years that do but I'm sure like some of the experiences you've built up over the past three years is probably paying off now this year having learned so much the three
SPEAKER_05: previous years. Absolutely and the thing is is a lot of people who have been wrestling their whole lives they've built bad habits whereas I came in and I'm just you know very multiple. I like to say I wrestle like a big baby like a toddler almost but I you know I just do the very basic things but I do them right we've got you know I'm right underneath Tom Erickson who's a legend in the sport so he just tells me what to do and I just do it and you know I'm not going against much bad habits. I'd say all ACC matches are a big deal everyone it's everyone in the ACC all the heavy weights they're pretty tough but I feel confident against all my ACC opponents. In fact I feel pretty confident against anyone in the NCAA right now.
SPEAKER_01: What kind of goals do you have for the rest of this senior year.
SPEAKER_05: You know I want to go to Tulsa Oklahoma and I want to be an all-American so we just got a couple more things to do punch the ticket to nationals and then take care of some business
SPEAKER_01: there.
SPEAKER_05: Well before we let you go just tell us how you ended up at Duke. Just recognize opportunities I was at a tournament it's called Super 32 it's a high school tournament in Greensboro ran into Coach Lanham shook his hand and we made it happen so just kept my eyes open and said yes.
SPEAKER_01: Nice and bomb mentioned Duke assistant coach Tom Erickson who has had a tremendous impact on his development Erickson was a two-time all-American heavyweight at Oklahoma State and an elite international competitor with now over 30 years of coaching experience. Nice and bomb has seen that experience pay off as he had just four wins his first two years before making a major step to 16 wins last year and the 24 and 3 mark this year. Another Duke Olympic sports athlete who has performed at an elite level this winter is Amina Matug of the indoor track and field team Amina is in her first year at Duke after arriving from her home country the Netherlands last summer. The distance runner was on the cross country team in the fall and earned all-america honors at the NCAA national meet before hitting the indoor track where she proceeded to set two hallowed school records right out of the gate in the indoor mile and the 3000 meters. While also helping the distance medley relay team establish a new school mark. I met up with Amina outside Cameron about a week before she and the blue devils headed to the ACC indoor championships at Louisville where she planned to run the 800 meters.
SPEAKER_02: Before I came here I had one and a half years of university in the Netherlands. I studied in my hometown in Lyda and then I decided to transfer here to Duke University. I came here halfway through August and yeah it's been really fun so far. There's definitely a difference between academics and also sports in the Netherlands and here in the US but honestly like Duke University is a perfect place to train, perfect place to study and it has been great so far.
SPEAKER_01: What about Duke caught your attention? Why was Duke the place you decided to transfer? I guess had you been looking to transfer to a school in the United States at some point regardless?
SPEAKER_02: Yeah so I decided that I wanted to look at my options in the US. I didn't make up my mind yet if I wanted to go for sure but it kind of depended what kind of schools I could go to and when Duke was one of the options I was really excited about that because Duke has such an amazing balance between academics and sports and the facilities here. Our great, the team is great, we have a great track and field and press country team and yeah North Carolina is really pretty too and the academics are so good so yeah there was nothing holding me back from coming to Duke.
SPEAKER_01: As Duke a place that you were familiar with and it heard a lot about around the Netherlands or did you start looking into it as they got interested in you?
SPEAKER_02: When I first heard Duke I definitely recognized it, I knew it was a really good school, I've heard it in like movies and stuff so yeah when I heard Duke I heard a little bit about it but of course I looked into it more and actually the more I looked into it the more I liked it.
SPEAKER_01: You were a very accomplished runner in the Netherlands with some national championships at under 18 and under 20 and obviously you had been at the university so was your decision to come here based a lot on academics, a lot on how you could further your athletic career or a combination?
SPEAKER_02: I mostly wanted to come here because of the combination there is between academics and athletics. I did know a lot of people that went from the Netherlands to study in the US and kind of the way athletics is handled here within the university is super professional so I thought it was the best way to further develop myself as an athlete and at the same time develop myself academically.
SPEAKER_01: Tell us a little bit about how you developed as a runner beginning when you started running and obviously you've done a lot now at your age level but how did you get interested in distance running?
SPEAKER_02: I actually got interested because of my family, my dad runs himself, he has done a couple of marathons and he still runs and then my sister who's two years old at me started running and she joined the track and field club in our city and I was her biggest fan. I always went with her like whenever she had training I went with her and I watched her and then when I was six years old I decided that I wanted to do that too so I started doing track and field and I did all the events and it was super fun and actually until I was 16 years old I did all the events and then I knew that my talent definitely was with distance running so I decided to focus on that and since I'm 16 I've mainly trained for running and yeah because of that like every year I was able to get faster and to develop myself and yeah it's been going really well so far.
SPEAKER_01: It sounds like it has, I was looking at some of your resume and having won the under 20 cross country championship and the under 2800 championship indoors in the Netherlands as well as the under 18, 800 championship three times and the under 18 steeple chase championships so a lot of championship things, what are some of the things that appeal to you about distance running?
SPEAKER_02: Well first of all I just love running, it's great to run whether you're doing it at a championship or not it's just a great activity for everyone I think. Of course I was drawn to running because I was good at it too which definitely helps but I love races because you have like a lot of different components that come together and distance running, you have speed that you have your endurance but also tactics and it's just really interesting to race people and I love that running makes me able to push myself and bring out the best in myself so I love to do that.
SPEAKER_01: I've always thought of the Netherlands as a fairly flat country and Durham and North Carolina people, not exactly flat, it's not like we're at the beach but there are a lot of rolling hills and things, any kind of adjustments you had to make to maybe more runs in a hilly terrain around here?
SPEAKER_02: Yes for sure, yeah in the Netherlands it's really hard to find any hill. If I had to do a hill sprints I would have to look up a little bridge and here in my first few weeks we're kind of hard with the hills but eventually it definitely makes me stronger to run in hills occasionally and by now I'm used to it and the surroundings here are amazing so it's great to run in such beautiful places so it's definitely, I don't mind it anymore but in the beginning it was a little hard.
SPEAKER_01: In the beginning here at Duke you're on the cross country team for the fall semester and it did very well in all your meets there and I think fourth in the ACC and sixth in the regionals in all American and national so a lot of accomplishments there. How did you feel about how you did in your first season of college cross country?
SPEAKER_02: Yeah I love my first season of cross country. It was great to be able to compete with my team which I never really had before in the Netherlands it's mostly just individual running and here you're going to meet with your team and that has been great and also coming in I know that cross country isn't my strongest area so I didn't have much expectations also because I didn't know any of the competition here so I really went into it like open mind it not putting too much pressure on myself and it was really nice to be able to just kind of like surprise myself every meet and yeah I'm really happy with how it went.
SPEAKER_01: So then you transitioned into indoor track which is what you're in right now. This track you said cross country maybe not your big thing is track something more that you've been focused on throughout your life and you're running on the track.
SPEAKER_02: Yeah for sure yeah track has definitely been my main focus and also the thing I'm best at so far at least and yeah the track also just I love track running. I like cross country as well but track is just a little bit more fun so yeah I'm really excited about the rest of this indoor season and the rest of the outdoor season.
SPEAKER_01: What kind of goals do you have for the rest of the indoor season? I know you've had some meets now and starting to get into championship time where the ACCs and the nationals are coming up. Do you have some certain things you're aiming to try to get finished and get done during the indoor season?
SPEAKER_02: For me mainly the focus is just to place as high as possible at ACCs and at nationals. I just want to be really competitive and yeah I want to finish the season knowing that I did everything I can to place as high as possible and I don't know what place that is going to be but I'm going to give everything to make sure I give a good fight.
SPEAKER_01: How did you feel about breaking the two Duke individual records you've broken so far during indoor season? What was the indoor mile and the other was the 3,000 meters?
SPEAKER_02: It felt really good to break those records especially seeing who those records were from before. The records were from like such accomplished women and it was really really cool to see that I broke records that they have run in college before and yeah I was also just really happy with the times and being able to break my PRs.
SPEAKER_01: So yeah you mentioned that and for the indoor mile the last two people that have held the record both turned out to be Olympians after they left here. Shannon Robery and Kate Van Buskerkin. I know the year that Shannon broke the indoor mile record. She won the NCAA Championship in the indoor mile and she also was second in the 3,000 of those two events so those people whose records you broke were pretty strong winners and it says a lot for what you're doing I guess.
SPEAKER_02: I mean I definitely look up to them and hopefully their accomplishments indicate something what I will do in the future but yeah it's really cool that women like that were here at Duke and set those records and I'm able to break them.
SPEAKER_01: You're looking forward to continuing on to outdoor track as well. Will you focus on the same sort of events like 3,000, 5,000, 1500 those kind of events in outdoor track as well?
SPEAKER_02: Yeah I'm planning to mainly focus on the 800 and 1500 outdoors. I just love the shorter distances but I mean never know what other events I'll run so yeah I'm just excited to have some fun on the track.
SPEAKER_01: Very good well we're doing this interview outside of a Cameron indoor stadium on a nice February day here the weather is great perfect day for running today. Just wondering though for you when you look at the overall time you've been here since August how have you liked the overall campus experience not just with the track team but overall being on this campus and interacting with the students going to class all that?
SPEAKER_02: It's really fun. First of all the campus is really pretty so it's never bad to walk around here. The weather is great and it's amazing to be around so many inspirational students like everyone here has a goal or purpose or a passion not only athletes so it's really interesting to interact with all different kinds of people that come here and yeah I've clicked great classes too and it's really interesting to learn from great professors so yeah I've had a great time here so far.
SPEAKER_01: Do you have any particular academic passion you're focusing on when you start thinking about what you're going to major in and all that?
SPEAKER_02: I'm majoring in philosophy but for the rest of my future I really don't know what I want to do yet so I'm just picking the course as I like and yeah I like philosophy so that's what I'm doing now.
SPEAKER_01: I guess just to wrap things up tell us a little bit about what training is like if you base it on your mileage and like how it differs when you're running cross country season versus now when you're in indoor track season like an average week what kind of mileage are you
SPEAKER_02: doing? I usually run around 50 miles. For me I was doing that in cross country and I'm also doing that during track now but definitely the way the mileage is built up is a little bit different compared to cross country you do way more aerobic stuff and you do more longer tempo work but during track we do more shorter and faster stuff. I like to track training more I love doing fast stuff on the track so yeah I really enjoy training.
SPEAKER_01: With all the places around here to train and run and work out if you found a favorite running spot around the Duke campus or Durham yet?
SPEAKER_02: My favorite running spot is the American tobacco trail. I love running there especially in the fall it was really pretty with the leaves and the trees but it's just amazing how long the trail goes on and when you're running there you can just kind of turn off your mind and just keep running forever so I really love that.
SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of people like that about running when they're able to do that just to wrap things up I was just thinking about how long you're going to be in the United States. Is there something you have my habits on your bucket list you want to get done or something you want to do or someplace you want to go during your time in the United States?
SPEAKER_02: I just hope to be able to go to as many different places as possible. It's really a privilege that I can be here in the US right now so I definitely want to make the most of it and it's really cool that with track and with cross country as well we get to travel to all these different places and I get to see all these different places so I've been really enjoying that and I hope to see many more places.
SPEAKER_01: One of those places she's looking to visit in March is Albuquerque, New Mexico side of the NCAA indoor track and field championships. Her indoor mile time ranks second in the country right now and her 3000 time ranks 12th. Now sitting here in Cameron before we wrap up this edition of Blue Devil 360 and answer the trivia question I wanted to circle back with John Shire about what it's like in this place when the spotlight is not on.
SPEAKER_06: There's a few times I remember being in here by myself but the most special time for me was after I was named head coach. My wife and I came in here and Marcel and I we just sat upstairs. I don't know who seats we are sitting in but we are just taking it all in and talking about what it means to be the coach at Duke, what it means to have the responsibility to lead our program through ups and downs and everything going into the future and that was a special moment. I'll also never forget my freshman summer, Joe Henderson and I, we were in our dorm rooms and we were talking about we could be the other person one on one and say you know you had a access card where I could get you in at any time so it was about two in the morning. Me and G walked right over to Cameron. They decide baskets at that time they were always up, the wooden backboards and we played one on one. I'm not going to say who won because I was, I'm not going to say but being in there at any time of day, any moment, this one makes it special.
SPEAKER_01: Special moments abound from basketball games of course so let's take care of the trivia question, the top individual scoring games for the Duke men and women in this building. For the men, the record belongs to the legendary Dick Rote with 48 points against North Carolina in his final home game way back in February of 1952. For the women, two players share the mark of 35 points. Carrie Kaufman did it first against UNC Asheville during the 1994-95 season. Then recent Hall of Fame inductee Elena Beard matched it against Maryland during her sophomore year of 2002. Beard and Grote share something else, both have their jerseys retired to the rafters of Cameron Indoor. For this month's closer, we have a short archived interview with Grote in which he remembers the day he set that record as well as other times when he hit the gym late at night. The only living charter member of the Duke Hall of Fame Grote is now 92 years old and we spoke with him when he visited Duke for a basketball game a few years ago. Then and now from Cameron Indoor Stadium, this is John Roth. Thanks for listening.
SPEAKER_00: I had a wonderful time here, it was extremely well by the people here in North Carolina. Of course, Cameron Indoor Stadium will always be something special to me. I remember coming here as a senior in high school taking one look at Cameron and saying to myself, this is where I want to play my basketball. It worked out to be wonderful because the people have treated me well here. The university has been great to me and it's always a joy to come back here.
SPEAKER_01: What do you remember about your final game here against North Carolina? It's one of those classic games in Duke history and what are some of the things that still stand out to you even though I know it's been 65 years later?
SPEAKER_00: It was always playing Carolina with special. I was very fortunate that two and a half years I played basketball here. I don't know that we lost to Carolina more than once and we played him two times every year and sometimes three. We even played a special game that my senior year for Georgia R.D. My former Kurtz who had passed away by that time to help his children go to school. That night was so special, everything I threw up went down and I'll never forget the feeling after that game was over and I don't know that this happens very often. Some of the Carolina players even come in the Duke locker room to shake hands with me which I thought was extremely nice.
SPEAKER_01: I've always heard a story that the game started a little bit late because they waited for your parents to get into the audience.
SPEAKER_00: My father fell in the parking lot and they ended up taking him to Duke Hospital and that's why the game was delayed until they got him back from the hospital. He banged a knee up outside in the parking lot.
SPEAKER_01: You also spent a lot of time practicing here and I've always heard stories of your nocturnal visits to the gym after practices.
SPEAKER_00: Believe it or not I had a great relationship with his janitor in those days. He taught me how to turn the lights on and I always left a window open so I used to bring my fraternity brothers and different people. We had some great games here at 10, 11 o'clock at night and never once in the two years that we used to come in and play basketball here, did the campus place ever bother us.

A two-time All-Ivy League selection at Cornell, Brian McAfee had already completed a stellar college baseball career but wanted more out of his college baseball experience. He enrolled at Duke in the fall of 2016 hoping for one more great season in a college baseball uniform. He quickly emerged as one of the top arms for Chris Pollard’s club, securing 7 victories which tied him for most on the team. McAfee also helped lead Duke to its first NCAA tournament in more than 50 years. Today our national pastime still drive Brian every day, even after he finished his professional baseball career. McAfee partnered with his dad, of all people, in a continuing effort to improve the game he loves, college baseball.

Following an impressive collegiate career at Duke and graduating in 2011, Ashley Twichell has excelled in professional open water swimming, garnering five World Championship medals and nine National Titles. After attempting to qualify for the Olympics in 2008, 2012 and 2016, Ashley finally got her chance and became one of the first Americans in any sport to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as she earned her spot on the US Open Water team in 2019. It would have been her first Olympic games appearance but her road to Tokyo took a turn when the coronavirus pandemic hit. But there’s a good chance in 2021 that she will be Team USA’s oldest rookie Olympic swimmer since 1908.

After four decades of service as both a coach and administrator at Duke University, Jacki Silar will retire from her position as Senior Associate Director of Athletics at the end of June. Since her arrival at Duke in 1979, Silar has served as an assistant women’s basketball coach, spent 15 seasons as the head field hockey coach then later went on to have an administrative role with 24 head coaches. Silar is also the lone Senior Woman Administrator in Duke Athletics history, holding the post since its inception in the 90s. Silar and host, Rebecca Fiorentino, talk about her transition from coaching to administration, how the athletic department has evolved in the 41 years she’s been at Duke, plus advice she has for future student-athletes, coaches and administrators.

This week on the show Chris Edwards interviews six members of the baseball team who prepared for the MLB Draft together after their season came to an abrupt end due to COVID-19 concerns. The draft is set to take place on Wednesday, June 10. Thomas Girard, Matt Mervis, Michael Rothenberg, Wil Hoyle, Joey Loperfido and Bryce Jarvis worked out, played ping-ping, Fortnite, came up with trick shots, and yes finished their class work assignments all under the same roof - for 12 weeks.
